"August $100,000" (Flight 1G): Lots Of Stack Above Average, Jerry Willis Tops Them All

"August $100,000 GTD"
$150 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)
Level 15 (Blinds 1,500/3,000/500)
Total Flight 1G Entries: 170
Flight 1G Players Remaining: 31

Jerry Willis (Boynton Beach, FL)

Play is about to enter the final level (Level 16), with a majority of the stacks remaining above the Day 2 chip lead (129,000).  While many of those stacks sit between 120,000-160,000, there is only one player to have eclipsed the 200,000 mark, and that is Jerry Willis (Boynton Beach, FL).  This may be Jerry's first time on the blog, but his "other half" has been featured frequently over the last few months.  Jerry's wife Dolline made the blog coverage handful of times during the Florida State Poker Championships, cashing twice during the series, including a deep run in Event #7 ($360 No Limit Hold'em - 20th Place $2,300).  Jerry's career earnings are just a few thousand short of his wife, but a deep run in this event would help him overtake the household title.

Jerry Willis - 270,000

Tony Ruberto (pictured left) and Jason Young

Jason Young (Suffern, NY) and Tony Ruberto (Miami, FL) have been sitting next to each other for most of the day, but managed to stay out of each other's way...until moments ago.  The two got it all-in pre, with Young covering Tony, who was at risk for his tournament.  Ruberto was ahead with A♠ K♣ against Young's A♣ Q♠, with the 6 4♠ 10♣ 86♥ runout securing him the double to over 130,000.

The very next hand, Young would open from UTG, and after getting one call, the player in the big blinds would shove for just over ten big blinds.  Jason then re-shoved, and was able to get the limper to fold his hand.  This time it would be Jason with the A K, up against the Q 10 of his opponent.  Both players would flop pairs, and while the turn would bring an open-ended straight draw for Young's opponent, a blank on the river helped him recover some of the chips lost to Ruberto.

Tony Ruberto - 134,000
Jason Young - 127,000

Level 13 (Blinds 1,000/2,000/300)
Total Flight 1G Entries: 170
Flight 1G Players Remaining: 48

Frank Traino (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

Players are back from their final break, and are now looking to navigate their way through these last four levels.  Jason Marshman leads the (48) players that still remain, but it's Pedro Palacio making a guy move to jump up to second in chips.  Palacio was left with just the starting stack a few levels ago, after watching Richard Leger go runner-runner flush to best his flopped straight.

Jason Marshman - 160,000
Pedro Palacio - 155,000
Michael Scheinberg - 125,000
Frank Traino - 115,000
Rafael Fernandes - 112,000
Edward Novak - 105,000
Jerry Willis - 101,000
Tony Ruberto - 100,000

Richard Leger (Lighthouse Point, FL)

There are many possible reasons, but today's flight has seen much more action that any of the afternoon flights that have come before.  We witnessed yet another multi-way all-in, this time at Table 6.  Three players were all-in on a K J 10♠ flop, with Richard Leger holding K10, up against A♣ J♣ and A♠ Q♣ (Pedro Palacio).

Even though Pedro flopped the straight, he still needed to fade the turn and river.  The 7 on the turn was all that Leger could ask for, outside of making a full house.  He gained nine more outs to win, one of which arrived on the river (9).  Leger would let out a celebratory fist-pump, having come behind to triple-up (60,000).  Pedro Palacio would win a 20,000 chip side-pot to stay alive, while the unknown player in the hand took the biggest loss.

Richard Leger - 60,000

Players will be heading on their final break of the day (at the end of Level 12), and will return to Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300).  Play is scheduled to conclude after Level 16, but if the field reaches (22) players, action will stop right there.

"August $100,000" (Flight 1G): Players Dropping Quickly, Amato Sticking Around

"August $100,000 GTD"
$150 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)
Level 11 (Blinds 600/1,200/200)
Total Flight 1G Entries: 170
Flight 1G Players Remaining: 64

Sergio Amato (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

In the fifty minutes since registration closed, the field has already lost thirty players, now down to (64) remaining.  Sergio Amato (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) was just all-in for his tournament life moments ago, but was in one of the more favorable positions a player can find themselves in.  Amato held A♠ A♣ against K K♣ and Q♠ Q♣, looking to triple-up to over 70,000.  The A 5♠ 2♠ flop was close to perfection for Amato, and while he felt comfortable holding the ace of spades after the 3♠ on the turn, both of his opponents would gain chop outs.  The river brought the J♣ though, and Amato would sit back down in his chair, collecting the sizable pot.

Sergio Amato - 72,000

Total Flight 1G Entries: 170
Flight 1G Players Remaining: 76

Jason Marshman (Tamarac, FL)

Roy Cohen (Boca Raton, FL) now has some competition for the chip lead, as Jason Marshman (Tamarac, FL) knocks two players out in a three-way pot.  The chips were in pre-flop, with Marshman holding A♠ K♣ against Q Q and 7♠ 7♣.  Jason would grab the lead right on the flop (A K♠ 6), leaving his opponents drawing thin.  The turn and river ran out clean for Marshman, who would chip up to 125,000 with the pot.  He becomes the second player to eclipse the century mark, and looks to continue trending in the right direction.

Jason Marshman - 125,000

Registration is now closed for Flight 1G, with the official entry total closing at (170), making this the second largest of the seven flights played.  Just over half of the total entries remain active in the field, with (94) players hoping to make it to the bagging process.  Here is a look at some of the updated counts across the field:

Roy Cohen - 132,000
Jeff Goodman - 73,000
Jason Marshman - 70,000
Kimberly Jones - 68,000
Edward Novak - 63,000
Tony Ruberto - 58,000

Roy Cohen (Boca Raton, FL)

At the end of this level, players will be heading on their second break of the day, and will return to Level 9 after ten minutes away from the table (400/800/100).  Roy Cohen (Boca Raton, FL) is the first player in the flight to "get it going," already over 130,000.  Cohen is the first player to eclipse the century mark, which is already four times the current chip average (29,400).  Roy is coming off a deep run in last week's "August $150,000," when he finished in sixteenth place for $2,338.

Once action resume, a first look at updated chip counts will be posted, as well as a look at the official numbers for this second to last flight of the tournament.  Players who are still looking to find a bag for tomorrow's Day 2, have only this evening's flight to try and do that (Flight 1H - 6:00pm).

Bryce McVay (Jupiter, FL)

As we were scanning the room for some of the larger early stacks, we just happened to pass a multi-way all-in unfolding.  Three players had chips in front of them, including Bryce McVay and John Magnetta.  The third (and unknown) player in the hand had both McVay and Magnetta covered, and when the hands were tabled, it would be McVay in third place.

Bryce held A 8 agains the A J of A. Nonymoous, and the A♠ Q♣ of Magnetta, who seemed very surprised to see that he held the best of it.  The 10 6♠ 7 flop missed each of the players, but Bryce did gain some equity with the straight draw...which he would hit right on the turn (9).  The turn would also give him outs to the nut-flush, meaning A. Nonymous was the only player drawing live, to a non-heart eight.  The river would bring the 2♠, sealing the pot for McVay, who chipped up above 40,000.

John Magnetta would be eliminated in the hand, but would re-enter the flight just a few moments later.

Claudemir Osorio (Orlando, FL)

When there is a tournament with a large guarantee and great value such as this event, players are going to make their way to the room...wherever they are from.  Claudemir Osorio (Orlando, FL) is a regular at Hard Rock in Tampa, but decided to take a drive down, and fire into this event.  Osorio may be a relative unknown (unless you're "in the know"), but he has a resume with over $155,000 in live tournament earnings.

Osorio has a bunch of smaller scores this year, with his last significant result coming during the WPT DeepStacks Summer Series (Hard Rock Tampa) last year.  Claudemir won the opening event of the series ($570 No Limit Hold'em), earning $36,620.  That result was just over a year removed from his largest ever tournament score, which came during the "Spring Poker Series" at the same property (Event #5 - $560 No Limit Hold'em).  Osorio would earn the title in that tournament as well, which was worth $41,878.  Claudemir continues the list of notables in this Saturday afternoon field, which includes the likes of:

John Magnetta
Jeffrey Goodman
Michael Goldfarb
Skip McDonough
Jason Young
Brenda Nelson
Dolline Willis
Jason Marshman
Danielle Bastarache

Level 5 (Blinds 150/300/25)

Abbey Daniels (Coral Springs, FL)

The field returns from break with (126) entries in the flight, which means that this tournament has eclipsed the posted $100,000 guarantee.  One of the more recent entries was Abbey Daniels (Coral Springs, FL), who has already lasted longer today, than she did in this week's $2,500 Single-Day Series.

On the first hand she played in Tuesday's tournament, Abbey flopped top set on a 2♣ 5 7♣ flop.  After she led out, Daniels would watch one player raise, and another three-bet shove.  There was no chance that Abbey was folding her hand, even though she was positive that she was up a flush draw.  She happened to be up against two flush draws in a multi-way all-in, with the board completing said flush on the river.  It was just poor luck, which is magnified in a larger buy-in such as the Single-Day Series, but Abbey's back in action in this Flight 1G field.  Some other late arrivals include:

John Palace
Bryce McVay
Steven Zukowski
Scott Levitt
Tom Gari
Linda Lipkins
Stephen Lipkins
Tim Morgan
Richard Kessler
Morris Heider
Washington Gavilanes

Total Flight 1G Entries: 97

Tom Gity (Pompano Beach, FL)

Tom Gity's (Pompano Beach, FL) run through this "August $100,000" event has been well documented...both the good and the bad.  Gity's opening flights have been sort of a roller coaster, chipping up nicely over the course of the flight, only to run into unavoidable spots to eventually bust.  With only two levels to go in the flight yesterday, Tom was one of the top stacks in the room, but shared the felt with the chip leader at the time (Fletcher McKinney).

After Tom three-bet an open from McKinney (25,000 from a 5,000 open), Fletcher would just call, and the two would see a flop of J J♠ 10.  Fletcher would check-call a shove from Gity, and had Tom in rough shape, holding A♠ A to Tom's Q Q.  The pot would propel Fletcher to the flight's chip lead (and second over heading to Day 2), while Gity found himself out of the flight just a few hands later.

Tom has put the misfortune of the last few days behind him, and is looking to continue his solid play...except this time he wants to reach the bagging process.

Players are heading on their first break at the end of this level, and will be returning to Level 5, with new blinds of 150/300/25.

Kimberly Jones (Pompano Beach, FL)

In order to reach the $100,000 guarantee during this flight, the total number of entries needs to reach (112), which looks like a sure thing.  That means that the rest of this flight, as well as the 6:00pm installment (Flight 1H), will just be padding on the number.  The field is littered with notables players, many of which we are seeing for the first time.  Kimberly Jones (Pompano Beach, FL) is one of those players in the field for the first time in this tournament, looking to record her first cash since May of this year ("May $100,000" - 41st Place $483).  In order to even think about cashing though, she (along with many others) needs to find a Day 2 bag, joining the (106) players already scheduled to return.  Joining Jones in this early field are:

Scott Hecker
Kenneth Bruno
Susan Meyer
Rafiki Brown
Daniel Miller
Andre Rakusa
Pedro Palacio
Richard Leger
Bruce Smith
Roy Cohen

Level 1 (Blinds 25/50)
Total Flight 1G Entries: N/A

The final pair of the "August $100,000" opening flights began just moments ago, as cards got in the air for Flight 1G.  Over the course of the first six flights for the "August $100,000," there have been a total of (758) entries, with (106) players successfully managing to get chips in a bag.  The combined prize pool for the four flights sits at $87,170, which is just the guarantee, with only an average of (56) entries needed n today's flights to reach the guarantee.

The chip average for the (106) players that are currently heading to Day 2 is 129,000, and with action resuming at the end of Level 15 on Sunday, that means an average stack will return with just over (30) big blinds.  The top five stacks after four flights belong to:

Jay Marajh - 374,500
Fletcher McKinney - 351,000
Anthony Bennett - 306,500
Matthew Ehrlich - 296,000
Alberto Niebla - 281,000

A full list of combined chip counts will be posted shortly, followed by a glance at some of the notables in today's afternoon flight.

Saturday, August 26th: After A Massive Friday Night, It's A "Guaranteed" Lock

ICYMI: Yesterday's action started at 11:00am with Flight 1E of the "August $100,000," the fifth of eight starting flights for the event.  Joseph Ritzie (Hamilton, OH) would be the final entry into the flight, bringing the overall total to (100).  After the scheduled sixteen levels were played, and the bagging process was finished, Fletcher McKinney (Winterhaven, FL) would bag the flight's chip lead (351,000).  Fletcher leads the (15) players to bag from the flight primarily because of a hand against Tom Gity.  McKinney and Gity got it in a the flop for a pot for over 300,000, with Fletcher holding pocket aces to Tom's pocket queens.  Some others to bag from the flight included Scott Bailey (215,000), Evan Teitelbaum (152,500), and Arlene Vazquez (83,000).

Then came the evening flight (Flight 1F) at 6:00pm, which brought numbers that nobody could have predicted.  A total of (242) entries made up the biggest flight of the six to be played to this point, and brought the combined total just short of the posted $100,000 guaranteed prize pool.  Of the (33) players to bag chips for Sunday's Day 2, Jay Marajh (374,500) bagged the chip lead, which also happens to be overall chip lead coming back.  Also part of the group to move on to Sunday were Anthony Bennett (306,500), Juan Rodriguez (170,000), Joseph Couden (114,500), and Avery Bass (71,000).

The numbers from yesterday brought the combined total to (758) entries, with (106) returning from tomorrow's Day 2.

Tournaments: The final pair of "August $100,000" flights are on today's schedule, with Flight 1G getting underway at 11:00am, followed by Flight 1H at 6:00pm.  Both flights have the same structure, with players sitting down to starting stacks of 18,000 units, and playing levels that are (25) minutes in length.  To this point in the tournament, there has been a total of (758) entries, with (106) players having bagged chip from said starting flights.

Promotions: The high hand promotions take another "breather" today, between yesterday's (11) hours worth of "turbo" high hands, tomorrow's (7) hours of $300 high hands (awarded every 15 minutes).  The "standard high hand" procedure is in place, awarded prizes to qualifying high hands every (30) minutes (with rollovers).
