Experiencing the "wrong" side of variance is a new thing for Michael Marks (North Lauderdale, FL), who has been running very pure in these large multi-flight events. On Michael's first attempt this afternoon, he was all-in for a pot worth close to 50,000, holding 9♠ 9♥ on a Q♣ 10♣ 9♣ board. His opponent has J♣ J♠, for an open-ended straight flush draw. Marks would watch as a club came on the turn, leaving him searching for a card to pair the board...which didn't happen.
Marks would then be left with just over 5,000, and after flatting a 3,100 raise pre-flop (in a three-way pot), he'd be put to a decision for his remaining chips. The 10♣ 9♣ 9♥ flop didn't connect with his holdings of 5♦ 7♦, but getting over 15:1 on his money was too good of a number. Michael would make the call, and while he was behind the K♥ Q♥ of his opponent, he still was drawing live. Marks then spiked the 5♥ on the turn to take the lead, but watched the J♣ fall on the river, stealing the pot away (and leaving him on the rail).
Michael didn't stay away long though, as he has re-entered the field, and is seated with a fresh starting stack of 15,000.
