Isle Open Event 1 (Flight 1E): McVay Lets His Play Do The Talking, Bags Flight 1E Chip Lead

2017 Isle Open | Event #1
$175 No Limit Hold'em | $100,000 GTD
Level 16 (Blinds 2,000/4,000/500)
Total Flight 1E Entries: 120
Flight 1E Players Remaining: 20

Flight 1E chip leader Bryce McVay is all smiles after earning an Event #15 seat worth $1,100.

Moments after posting Alan Saltzman's "shot call," he immediately dipped down below 150,000, leaving Bryce McVay as the only player above 200,000.  Bryce continued to pick up pots here and there, and before you knew it, he was pushing 300,000.  On the final hand of the flight, Rob Klassman had an opportunity to call a blind shove from Dolphus Powers, which would have given him the chip lead (had he called and won).  Klassman ended up folding his hand, sealing McVay's chip lead, and giving him the Event #15 seat ($1,100 No Limit Hold'em | $150,000 GTD).

The tournament staff is currently verifying the bags, with official chip counts from the flight to be posted once the process is completed.

Isle Open Event 1 (Flight 1E): Saltzman Calling His Shot, Resistance On The Way

2017 Isle Open | Event #1
$175 No Limit Hold'em | $100,000 GTD
Level 15 (Blinds 1,500/3,000/500)
Total Flight 1E Entries: 120
Flight 1E Players Remaining: 20

New "frenemies" Alan Saltzman (pictured left) and Bryce McVay, both in the running for the Event #15 seat.

Alan Saltzman (Lantana, FL) lost a race to John Vasser in Level 11, and after shipping over the chips to match Vasser's all-in, Alan would be left with less than (15) big blinds.  He experienced a roller coaster like two levels to follow, doubling up...giving some back...and doubling up once again.  Once he was able to get back to an above average stack, Saltzman began a steady climb to the top of the chip counts.  He sits as the leader in the field with over 220,000, but has a close eye on his neighbor (Bryce McVay), who is only a few thousand behind.

"Just make sure you note that I'm going to be him," Saltzman said in regards to his newest "frenemy."  While beating McVay may be meaningful in some fashion to Alan, it doesn't mean he'll ship the chip lead bonus.  There are still players within striking distance of his number, with just over (40) minutes remaining in the day.

Isle Open Event 1 (Flight 1E): Updated Chip Counts Post-Break

Level 13 (Blinds 1,000/2,000/300)
Total Flight 1E Entries: 120
Flight 1E Players Remaining: 28

Michael Pawelek (Buffalo, NY) is the current favorite to bag the chip lead bonus, but lots can change over the course of the final three levels.

As mentioned early, there is a "log-jam" of sort on the top of the leaderboard, with just under two hours remaining to settle things.  Michael Pawelek (Buffalo, NY) made a big fold earlier, when faced with two all-ins in front of him (in the featured hand between Bob Arnold and Ronald Levy), but has since trended in the right direction.  Pawelek holds a small lead over a handful of players, including Bryce McVay and Bob Arnold.

Michael Pawelek - 215,000
Bryce McVay - 200,000
Bob Arnold - 180,000
Tony Dudley - 140,000
Oneil McCalla - 110,000
John Vasser - 105,000
Alan Saltzman - 100,000

Isle Open Event 1 (Flight 1E): Shaping Up To Be A Close Race, Players Take Final Break

2017 Isle Open | Event #1
$175 No Limit Hold'em | $100,000 GTD
Level 12 (Blinds 800/1,600/200)
Total Flight 1E Entries: 120
Flight 1E Players Remaining: 33

Tony Dudley (Pembroke Pines, FL) may not have the tournament experience that others in the field do, but it's chips that do the talking...for the most part.

While there aren't any massive stacks across the four active tables, there are a group of players around the 150,000-175,000 range, sure to give us some drama in regards to the "chip lead bonus."  Tony Dudley (Pembroke Pines, FL) is one of those players towards the top of the leaderboard, sitting with just under 150,000.  Dudley is a recreational player with over $4,000 in tournament earnings, spanning a total of six  recorded results.  Tony's largest tournament cash is $859, meaning a deep run in this event would surely be the highlight of his poker career.

Players are heading on their final break of the day, and will be returning to Level 13, with new blinds of 1,000/2,000/300.  Once the cards are in the air again, we will bring you updated chip counts from the field, followed by a full listing of players remaining in the field.

Isle Open Event 1 (Flight 1E): Vasser Flips Well, But Doesn't Trust The Same Hand

2017 Isle Open | Event #1
$175 No Limit Hold'em | $100,000 GTD
Level 11 (Blinds 600/1,200/200)
Total Flight 1E Entries: 120
Flight 1E Players Remaining: 45

John Vasser (Coral Springs, FL) didn't think he could flop two sets in a row, and ended up costing himself a few chips.

John Vasser (Coral Springs, FL) would open the action at Table 1 with a raise to 6,000, and watch players folded around to Alan Saltzman in late position.  Saltzman three-bet shoved for over 37,000, making the decision for the button and blinds pretty easy.  The three players released their hands, and Vasser quickly made the call.  Vasser was flipping with 7 7♣ for his tournament life, against the A♠ J of Saltzman, but quickly grabbed a huge lead on the 8♠ 6♣ 7 flop.  The turn and river ran out clean for Vasser, who ended up doubling to 52,000 (just below chip average).

The very next hand, Saltzman was all-in for his remaining 10,000, with Glenn Popkin re-shoving for close to 28,000.  With action on Vasser once again, he would say to his opponents, "do you think I can do it again?"  The dealer quickly stopped any table conversation in the multi-way pot, with John eventually folding what he said was pocket sevens.  He would have flopped at set once again, and potentially chipped up to 90,000...but chose the "same hand can't win" route.

John Vasser - 52,500

Isle Open Event 1 (Flight 1E): Pawelek Perturbed, But Ends Up Releasing To Levy

2017 Isle Open | Event #1
$175 No Limit Hold'em | $100,000 GTD
Level 10 (Blinds 500/1,000/100)
Total Flight 1E Entries: 120
Flight 1E Players Remaining: 55

Ronald Levy (Lake Worth, FL) is able to fade the eleven outs of Bob Arnold, and ends up climbing the leaderboard
because of it.

On the turn of a board reading 4♣ 8 7♣ Q♣, Michael Pawelek lead out for 6,500 (into a pot of 10,000).  Bob Arnold was next to act, and he'd shove for 92,500, with Ronald Levy calling for less behind (47,800).  Pawelek still had close to 70,000 behind, and was visibly (and verbally) perturbed with the sizing that Arnold chose.

"Why would you raise that much...6,500 to 92,500, what are you doing," Pawelek asked, as he thought about his next move.  Another player at the table eventually called a clock, and Michael would release his hand about half the way through the countdown.  The two hands were then tabled, with Arnold showing A♣ 4♠, and Levy A Q♠.  Arnold would end up bricking the river, with Ronald Levy more than doubling to over 100,000.

Isle Open Event 1 (Flight 1E): Chip Counts From Across The Field

Total Flight 1E Entries: 120

Oneil McCalla (Miramar, FL) hasn't crossed the century mark yet, but he sits with one of the top stacks in the field.

Registration is now closed for Flight 1E of Event #1 (2017 Isle Open), with a total of (120) entries, and $16,200 going towards the overall prize pool.  That brings the combined number to this point up to (564) entries, and $76,140.  At this pace, we should see the guarantee eclipsed during Flight 1G (tomorrow morning), at the latest.  Antoine Bahi (Deerfield Beach, FL) has used that fortunate hand from earlier to separate himself from the field, leading his nearest competitor by over a full starting stack.

Antoine Bahi - 125,000
Bryce McVay - 98,000
Jeffrey Trudeau Jr. - 97,000
Oneil McCalla - 70,000
Tom Gity - 60,000
Skip McDonough - 55,000
Alberto Niebla - 48,000

Jeffrey Trudeau (Orlando, FL) is definitely a player to look out for in this event, experiencing the most successful year of his poker carer.

Jeffrey Trudeau Jr. (Orlando, FL) had an impressive tournament resume coming into this year, but has made 2017 the "richest" of his career...with three months still remaining.  Trudeau has career earnings over $514,000, with over $191,800 coming this year alone.  Outside of his two five-figure scores over the last month (WPT Borgata Poker Open | $300 NLH Deepest Stack | 2nd Place - $19,629, and WSOP Circuit SHR | $1,125 No Limit Hold'em | 4th Place - $15,845), Jeffrey also notched his largest career score in May, winning the $570 No Limit Hold'em "Deeper Stack" event at Seminole Hard Rock ($49,148).

Trudeau entered this field during the first break of the day, and has since done very nicely with the time spent at the table, sitting with just under 100,000 in front of him.

Players are taking their second break in just a few minutes, returning to Level 9, and new blinds of 400/800/100.  Once the cards are back in the air, registration will be closed for Flight 1E, and we will bring you all of the official numbers.

Isle Open Event 1 (Flight 1E): Antoine Bahi Goes With Feel, And It Works Out

2017 Isle Open | Event #1

Level 7 (Blinds 250/500/75)
Total Flight 1E Entries: 112

Antoine Bahi (Deerfield Beach, FL) knew he was well behind, but felt that if he completed his draw, it would be good enough to win the sizable pot.

Table 3 was approached just as a hand was playing out between Manny Perez, Joseph Mancuso, and Antoine Bahi.  On a flop of 10 7 K♠, Mancuso fired out a bet of 5,000, with Bahi calling, and Perez check-shoving (for 13,000).  Mancuso quickly re-shoved (for less), leaving Bahi the last to act, and he would take some time.  He was talking aloud, saying that if he made the call and won, he'd "have more chips that he's ever had before."  While the statement was pure humor, it was clear he didn't love his spot, but ended up making the call.  Bahi would roll over 8 9♠ (open ended draw), while Perez tabled J 8♣ (gut-shot draw), and Mancuso J♣ 10♠ (holding the best of it, with a pair of tens).

The turn would bring the 6♣, completing Bahi's straight, and giving him a commanding lead, heading to the river.  The dealer would place the 8 on the river, which would lock up the pot for Bahi, who eliminated both of his opponents (having them both covered).  We don't yet know if Perez and/or Mancuso are re-entering this flight, but we're sure to see them again before Saturday's final flight.

Antoine Bahi - 70,000

David Rivera (pictured yesterday) is looking to put his Flight 1C experience behind him, and bag chips for
Sunday's Day 2.

As we made a few laps around the field, one of the players spotted was David Rivera (Davie, FL), who is surprisingly on his second attempt to bag chips.  After the final break of the day during Flight 1C, Rivera returned to play as the chip leader, with over 160,000 in front of him (and only four levels left to play).  One would think that his worst case scenario would be bagging a lesser stack for Sunday, but exiting the field prior to the flight's conclusion...that would surprise many.  That is exactly what makes tournament poker so difficult (and just poker in general), as you can be cruising through the day, and suddenly run into unavoidable spots.  Rivera ended up running pocket kings into aces, flopping top two when his opponents flopped sets...just all of the ingredients for the recipe for disaster.

There is also a beauty to tournament poker though, as David is able to put those hands behind him, and return today with a fresh slate.  While he pictured things otherwise, Rivera ends up featured in our second installment of "faces in the crowd," for this Flight 1C field:

Pasquale Caiazza
Michael Pawelek

Bryce McVay (Jupiter, FL) is even more driven to get his hands on a title, after falling short of a WSOP Circuit
ring two weeks ago.

Bryce McVay (Jupiter, FL) is known as "Tank Davis" by a select few (basically just the other eleven players in his fantasy league), but the moniker may begin to catch on, as he's trucking through tournament fields as of late.  McVay, who spent some time living in Tampa before moving to Jupiter, was just one spot short of winning a WSOP Circuit ring two weeks ago.  Bryce found himself heads-up against David Gunas in Event #3 ($365 No Limit Hold'em Monster Stack), and after a long battle, ended up settling for second place.

While the finish wasn't the goal he had in mind, Bryce did collect $17,538 for his efforts, which is the second largest tournament score of his career.   The money brings his total live earnings over $247,000, which is super impressive for a player who commits time to both tournament poker, as well a cash games.  "Tank Davis" is starting his morning off with a cup of the Isle's finest coffee, and looking to get through this flight with just one entry.  McVay tops our second look at notables in the field, with a list that includes the following players:

Luis Santoni
Alvaro Grisales
James Salmon
Michael Spadafore
Errol Massey
Susan Krowitz
Raymond "Skip" McDonough
Fabio Santos
Robert Arnold

Isle Open Event 1 (Flight 1E): Faces In The Crowd (Part I)

Nagui Yassa (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) looking to continue a great run that started two weeks ago, during the
WSOP Circuit series at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood.

To start the Flight 1A coverage on Monday, we featured Daniel Genachte (Deerfield Beach, FL), who was coming off of a final table appearance at the WSOP Circuit $1,675 Main Event final table (Seminole Hard Rock).  There is another player in this afternoon's field that is coming off of a career highlighting series, as Nagui Yassa (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) cashed in four events during the same series.  Yassa would earn his career best score to start the series, as he reached the final table of Event #1 ($580 No Limit Hold'em), eventually bowing out in 4th place ($46,974).  The cash was $12,000 more than his prior top score, which came during the Festa Al Lago series in Las Vegas (2009).

As mentioned above, Nagui went on to cash in three more events after his opening performance, including the $1,675 Main Event and a final table finish in Event #13 ($365 No Limit Hold'em Turbo).  Nag headlines the first group of notables in today's field, joining names like:

Oneil McCalla
Nancy Birnbaum
Scott Hecker
Russell Williams
Duane Minerva
Tom Gity
Joseph Mancuso
David Gelley
Paula Alibrandi

Players will be taking their first break of the day at the conclusion of this level, returning to Level 5, and new blinds of 150/300/50.  Once the cards are in the air, we will continue to bring you the second installment of "faces in the crowd."

The "second half" of Event #1 starting flights begin in just a few moments, as Tournament Director Ralph Brandt goes over the rules announcement for the players already seated in the Flight 1E field.  We are currently looking at an event that has (444) entries over the first four flights, equating to $59,940 going towards the overall tournament prize pool.  There have been (63) players who found bags from Flight 1A through Flight 1D, with the top ten stacks listed below:

Cameron Collins D 512,500
Michael Russo 393,000
Paulius Bikus C 318,500
Sean JonesB 303,000
Robert Schafer 274,500

John Magnetta 257,000
Alfonso Perez 251,000
Darcy DeconzaA 234,500

* The letters next to player's names signify those that received the "chip leader bonus" from their respective flights.

With the action getting underway, we will go over the structure for each flight once again.  The structure mirrors the first two days of action, with players sitting down to starting stacks of 20,000 units, and playing levels of (25) minutes over the course of the flight.  Play is scheduled to conclude after (16) completed levels, but if the field reaches the 10% number, then the clock will pause and the bagging process will begin.  That is exactly what happened last night in Flight 1B, with the action stopping with just over three minutes in Level 15.  Therefore, Day 2 will now begin at that point, meaning the big stacks begin the day even deeper planned (along with the shorter stacks as well, which is even more important to those players).

Live coverage of Flight 1C will continue throughout the afternoon, updating followers on all of the action, including the "race for the chip lead bonus."  The official counts from the opening pair of flights, along with a reminder of the new Twitter handle (@PokerIslePP) will be posted, before we shift our focus onto the notables in today's flight.

Friday, October 6th: A Big Weekend Ahead For Event #1, Numbers Continue To Climb

ICYMI: The Event #1 numbers continue to grow larger, as the second pair of starting flights attracted a combined (234) entries.  That brings the total number of entries over four flights to (444) entries, which equates to a prize pool of $59,940.  With the conclusion of Flight 1D being the halfway point of the eight starting flights, the same pace would see a final prize pool in the $120,000 range.  Being that the weekend numbers are always larger, we could have an opening event that ends up with a $140,000-$150,000 prize pool.

Breaking down the numbers from yesterday, Flight 1C started the action, and saw registration close with (107) total entries.  Once the "hand-for-hand" process concluded (at the end of Level 16), a total of (17) players would remain, with Paulius Bikus (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) bagging the flight's chip lead (318,500).  Bikus took a chip lead around Level 12, and although he was challenged by Alfonso Perez late in the flight, Paulius had a pretty comfortable run to the "chip lead bonus."

If Bikus's run was "comfortable" in Flight 1C, then Cameron Collins' just made things look "easy" in Flight 1D.  Cameron bagged an incredible stack of 512,500 to end the night, which was over 115,000 more than his nearest competitor (Michael Russo).  Normally, Russo's stack of 393,000 would surely be good enough to win that "chip lead bonus," but he'll have to be happy entering Day 2 with a top ten stack.  Some other notables to bag chips from Flight 1D included Juan Rodriguez (269,500), John Magnetta (257,000), Andreas Athanasopoulos (158,000), Dolphus Powers (129,000), and Andres Morales (89,500).

Tournaments: The numbers in a multi-flight tournament such as Event 1 usually grow as the weekend is reached, meaning that we could be looking at one of the largest opening event fields in the history of the Isle Open.  There are six flights over the next three days, with the players that have bagged chips returning for Day 2 on Sunday.  Each of the starting flights have the same structure, with entrants sitting down to starting stacks of 20,000 units, and playing levels that last (25) minutes over the course of the event.  Registration for each flight is open through Level 8 (approx. 2:40pm), and is scheduled to conclude after Level 16 (approx. 6:10pm).  The chip lead bonus is back, as the player to bag the largest stack from each flight will earn a seat into Event #15 ($1,100 No Limit Hold'em | $150,000 GTD).

Promotions: When the doors open for the day, the first hour (9:00am-10:00am) will award $150 every (30) minutes.  The high hands will then transition from 10:00am-12:00am (midnight), with the opportunity to win $400 every (30) minutes.  During that period, the promotion sees tournament players eligible each half-hour for $100 high hands, 2/2 limit hold'em players eligible for $200 high hands, 2/4 limit hold'em players eligible for $300 high hands, and all other raked games (1/2-5/10 NLH, 4/8 Omaha 8B, 6/12 O.E., etc.) eligible for $400 high hands.  From 12:00am-3:00am, players are eligible for $100 high hands every hour.
