BATB Event #14 ($1,500 NLH Championship): Entering The Final Level Of Play, With A Race Too Close To Call

2018 Battles At The Beach

Level 10 (Blinds 600/1,200/200) | Structure
Total Flight 1B Entries: 113

The tournament clock just transitioned to Level 10, which will be the final level of Flight 1B. There will be no runaway chip leader from this flight, as these final forty minutes will determine who walks away with the Event #18 seat.

The clock will be paused with 10:00 minutes remaining, with the remaining players then finding out how many hands are left in the night.  Once those hands are completed at each table, the bagging process will begin.  Official end of Flight 1B chip counts will be posted shortly thereafter, along with the winners of the chip lead bonus.

Iaron Lightbourne (London, England) brings an impressive resume to the table, but also a sense of the unknown, will little to no history with most of these players he's sharing the felt with.

Players have returned from their final break of the flight, with just two levels left to play for the evening.  That being said, it's now a good time to look at some of the larger stacks in the room, to see how players fare in regards to the chip lead bonus (Event #18 seat).  Iaron Lightbourne (London, England) leads the field, sitting with 150,000, but has a group of players within striking distance.  Lightbourne may be a new name to the blog, but he owns a resume with over $1,378,000 in live tournament earnings, including a WTP Nottingham Main Event win ($308,766).

Iaron Lightbourne - 150,000 (155bb)
Jose Delcid - 145,000 (145bb)
Ian O'Hara - 125,000 (125bb)
Alex Nguyen - 123,000 (123bb)
Donald Francois - 110,000 (110bb)
Nancy Birnbaum - 100,000 (100bb)

As mentioned in the title, next month will see the first every single-ante format multi, with the $1,100 No Limit Hold'em Single-Ante ($200,000 GTD) event running from April 26th-April 29th.  The tournament has a great structure, with 30,000 unit starting stacks, and levels that last (40) minutes during opening flights (transitioning to 50 minutes on Day 2).  There will be both step-qualifiers and satellites for the event, with structures sheets to be released soon.

BATB Event #14 ($1,500 NLH Championship): Nancy Birnbaum Doubles Through Saltzman, After Time In The Tank

Nancy Birnbaum (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) was not confident that she had the best hand when Alan Saltzman shoved, but ended up making the correct decision, after thinking things through.

On a board of J3♠ 5 7♠, with over 25,000 already in the pot, Alan Saltzman would shove all-in against Nancy Birnbaum.  Alan's stack of 44,425 was just over 5,000 more than Nancy's, so if Nancy called...and was wrong, she'd be eliminated from play.  Nancy went deep into the tank, with her hands on her head, just trying to figure out what she could be up against.  After about ninety seconds, she shrugged her shoulders, and announced a call.

"You got it," Alan said, "I don't have anything."  He would flip of K Q♣, which was drawing dead agains the K♣ K of Birnbaum.  The river was just a formality, as Nancy doubles to just under 100,000, while Alan drops down to the ten big blind mark.

Nancy Birnbaum - 98,000 (122bb)
Alan Saltzman - 7,500 (9bb)

Ian O'Hara (Boca Raton, FL) had been navigated a stack below chip average for most of the day, but just picked up a nice pot to pad the numbers.

Isle Poker notable Ian O'Hara (Boca Raton, FL) just got a little boost to his stack, as he held 8♠ 8♣ on a board of Q 6 6♣ 8.  After making the full house (and checking), his opponent announced himself all-in for 21,000, with O'Hara quickly making the call.  While his opponent wasn't drawing dead (A♠ Q♠), it would take a miracle on the river for Ian to lose the hand (two outs remained for his adversary).  The river eventually brought a deuce, locking up the hand for O'Hara, who is now sitting with close to double the chip average.

Ian O'Hara - 70,000 (116bb)

BATB Event #14 ($1,500 NLH Championship): Luke Brereton Knocks Out Beckley, Heads To Break As The Chip Leader

Event #14 | $1,500 NLH Championship ($500,000 GTD)

Level 6 (Blinds 250/500/75) | Structure
Total Flight 1B Entries: 103

Luke Brereton (Naples, FL) bypassed events in his area, to come down and play this Battles At The Beach $1,500 Championship...which currently looks like a good decision.

We'd approach Table 7 just as the dealer completed a board of A 5♣ Q 3♠ K♣, with Joshua Beckley shoving the river for just over 8,500.  An unknown opponent released their hand, with Luke Brereton (Naples, FL) quickly making the call.  Beckley turned over K K♠, having made a set on the river, but was in second place against Luke's A♣ A (flopped top set).  Joshua could only smile as he walked away from the table, while Brereton uses the newfound chips to take over the top spot on the leaderboard (125,000).

Luke is an accomplished tournament player, originally from England, with over $1,229,000 in career tournament earnings.  A majority of that number was won last year, as he recorded results in 2017 worth just over $492,000.  Brereton finished runner-up in the 2017 Goliath Phamous Poker Series $2,000 NLH Main Event ($260,964), and followed that up with an eighth place finish in the $5,250 NLH Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Championship Event ($100,408).

Luke Brereton - 125,000 (250bb)

Players are now on their third break of the day, and will be returning to Level 7, with new blinds of 300/600/75.

BATB Event #14 ($1,500 NLH Championship): Pearlman's Passive Play Works, More Than Doubles Up

Event #14 | $1,500 NLH Championship ($500,000 GTD)

Level 6 (Blinds 250/500/75) | Structure

Two-time WSOP Circuit ring winner Daniel Pearlman (Hollywood, FL) just vaulted up the leaderboard, after doubling through Jose Delcid.

Table 5 was approached on the flop (8 7♣ 2), in a hand between Jose Delcid, Qasem Jamhour, and Daniel Pearlman.  Delcid checked the flop (from the small blind), with Jamhour putting out a bet of 3,400, which Pearlman called (from the button).  Delcid then pushed forward a check-raise to 10,400, which would be called by both players.  After the dealer placed down the 4♣ on the turn, Delcid shoved all-in for 53,000, which had both of his opponent covered.  Qasem quickly tossed his hand in the muck, with Pearlman taking just a few moments, before calling for less.

Board: 8 7♣ 2 4♣

Delcid: A 8♠
Pearlman: A♣ A

River: J♠

Even though Delcid shoved, Daniel ended up tabling his hand first, with Delcid pretty shocked to see what Pearlman had.  Jose turned his hand over with a smile, knowing that he'd need to hit a two-outer on the river to win.  It wouldn't be for Delcid, who dropped down to 16,500, while Pearlman chipped up to just under 100,000.

Daniel Pearlman - 95,000 (190bb)

Followers of the blog are now getting a first look at the April Tournament Calendar, which just made it's way to the poker room (for those that would like a hard copy).  There are a few highlighting events to note, beginning with a little Single-Ante Mini-Series, which starts on April 2.  For three afternoons in a row, there will be a single-ante event, with escalating prize points (and guarantees).  There is also a $175 No Limit Hold'em ($100,000 GTD) multi that runs from April 18th through April 22nd.  Lastly, we will be running the first ever Isle Poker single-ante format multi, which has an $1,100 buy-in...$200,000 guaranteed prize pool...and structure that is about as player-friendly as they get.

Al Gomez (Miami, FL) has made a habit lately of going deep in large field tournaments, and his confidence at the table is very much apparent.

Just a few weeks ago, Al Gomez (Miami, FL) and Flight 1A chip leader Scott Levitt were sharing the final table, during the $250 No Limit Hold'em event in the Hard Rock's Escalator Series.  They ended up finishing second and third (respectively) in a chop, with both earning over $30,000.  Now Gomez is looking to join Levitt atop the leaderboard, as he rockets into first chip count, with over 110,000.  Gomez already has over $40,000 in tournament cashes this year, and is once again putting himself in position to make a deep run.  Listed below, are some of the chip counts from across the field (tallied just after play resumed from break).

Al Gomez - 110,000 (275bb)
Donald Francois - 90,000 (225bb)
Marc Sacheli - 70,000 (175bb)
Gregory Spinder - 60,000 (150bb)
Alan Saltzman - 60,000 (150bb)
Ryan D' Angelo - 55,000 (137bb)

BATB Event #14 ($1,500 NLH Championship): Chiapetta Puts A Pretty Brutal Beat On John Ambrosi

Michael Chiapetta (Boca Raton, FL) is just over two months removed from a deep run in the Lucky Hearts Poker Open $3,500 NLH Main Event (10th Place - $49,680).

Passing Table 9, we spotted a hand between Michael Chiapetta (Boca Raton, FL) and John Ambrosi.  The players were on the turn of a board that read K♠ 10♣ 4♠ K, with Chiapetta just having shoved for his remaining 21,000.  Ambrosi quickly made the call (for less), and eagerly awaited to see what he was up against.  Michael sheepishly turned over 6 6♠, with Ambrosi looking back at the board, almost confused with what he saw.  John then turned over A K♣, meaning Michael just two outs remaining in the deck to win...once of which came on the river (6♣).

"That's just sick," Keith Nassetta said aloud, as John Ambrosi stood from the table, and began his walk towards the exit.  Chiapetta, who is a tournament veteran with over $352,000 in career earnings, is now  over 60,000.

Michael Chiapetta - 64,000 (213bb)

Players will be taking their second break at the end of this level, returning to new blinds of 200/400/50 (Level 5).

Donald Francois (Delray Beach, FL) has both the blessing...and sometime curse, of being the early chip leader in these long opening flights.  Staying atop the leaderboard for an entire day of play is extremely difficult, but even with a little downswing, it's possible to recover (as we saw from Scott Levitt yesterday).

There hasn't been a start like Scott Levitt's yesterday afternoon (who already had 90,000 in Level 3), but there is one player in this Flight 1B field off to a very strong start.   Satellite winner Donald Francois (Delray Beach, FL) is already over 70,000, and finds himself the very early chip leader.  Francois has over $38,000 in live tournament earnings, a majority of which came from an Isle Poker result last year, when chopped a $140 No Limit Hold'em ($200,000 GTD).  Francois received second place money in the deal, which was worth $20,703, and still stands as his largest ever tournament score.

Donald Francois - 71,000 (236bb)

It's been a while since Ariel Williams (Miami, FL) has been in the Isle Poker spotlight, with her last tournament cash coming during a $75 No Limit Hold'em ($50,000 GTD), run last June.

There were only a few satellite winners that chose Flight 1A to play in, so it doesn't come as a surprise to see a large number of those players in today's field.  Ariel Williams (Miami, FL) was one of eleven players to earn entry into today's event (from last night's $175 No Limit Hold'em Satellite), and is joined at Table 1 by Diane Linke, who also earned a seat yesterday evening.  Other satellite winners in the field from last night's event include Bret Grebow and Robert Chusid.

Williams has seen a good amount of success in Isle Poker events, with her last significant score coming during this series last year.  Ariel finished in eighth place during Event #8, which was  a$360 No Limit Hold'em tournament ($200,000 GTD).  The result was worth $8,490, which helped bring her close to the $50,000 lifetime earnings mark, a milestone that she has since eclipsed.

Other non-satellite notables to join the field since the last update include:

Joshua Kay
Daniel Pearlman
Joseph Gotlieb
David Inselberg
Marc Sacheli
Raymond McDonough
Joshua Lowing

BATB Event #14 ($1,500 NLH Championship): Beckley Back In Action After Two Nice Scores

Joshua Beckley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) is just a week removed from his third place finish in the $560 No Limit Hold'em event, during the Hard Rock's Escalator Series ($44,043).

The past week was a good one for former WSOP Main Event runner-up Joshua Beckley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), as he earned two five-figure scores in a span of seven days.  The good run started last weekend, when Beckley reached the final table of the $560 No Limit Hold'em event during the Hard Rock's Escalator Series.  Joshua would enter three-handed play as the chip leader, but ran into a few tough spots, which ended up costing him a majority of his chips.  He'd end up bowing out in third place, but got a pretty nice conciliation prize of $44,043.

Just a few days after the live tournament score, Beckley would earn just over $26,000 in an event online, finishing runner-up in a $1,000 No Limit Hold'em event.  Since moving to Florida two years ago, Beckley has seen some nice tournament success here at the Isle Poker Room, with deep runs during the 2017 Florida State Poker Championships $1,500 Main Event, and the 2017 Isle Poker Open $1,500 Championship Event.  Joshua arrived as part of a rush of entries, which included the following players:

Nancy Birnbaum
Daryl Jace
Dolphins Powers
Alex Nguyen
Matthew Lambrecht
Howard Charyn

Ryan D'Angelo (Binghamton, NY) was one of the first to take their seat in today's Flight 1B field, still looking to grab his first Isle Poker tournament cash (recorded).

Today's Flight 1B pace of entry is slightly quicker than yesterday, with the final number of entries expected to eclipse the century mark.  One of the first players to take their seats this afternoon was Ryan D'Angelo (Binghamton, NY), who arrives with one of the most impressive tournament resumes of anyone that will follow.  Ryan has over $3,045,000 in lifetime earnings, including a WSOP bracelet win from 2016 ($1,500 2-7 Draw Lowball).  D'Angelo has recorded (73) results since 2006, with (27) of those being final table cashes.  While he has results all over the world, D'Angelo is still looking for his first Isle Poker major tournament result, having made a few attempts at championship events over the last year.  Some other "early birds" in the flight include:

Neil Blumenfield
Dylan Drazen
Robert Chusid
Scott Efron
Alan Saltzman
Dominic Jones
Thomas Gari

"Friday is for flighting," as players start arriving for Flight 1B of the Battles At The Beach $1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship ($500,000 GTD), with cards to get in the air momentarily.  The Event #14 action yesterday afternoon, with a strong opening flight, as a total of (80) entries made up the Flight 1A field.  After ten levels of fifty minutes, (27) players were to left to bag their chips for Sunday's Day 2, led by Scott Levitt (191,100).  Levitt started the day off incredibly strong, ballooning his stack to 90,000, just a few levels into the day.  An early evening table change (as his original table broke) saw a huge downswing for Levitt, but he would end up recovering, and dealing the chip lead bonus on one of the final hands of the night.  TJ Shulman (Boynton Beach, FL) also locked up a bonus on the last hand of play, using pure aggression against Jeffrey Saunders, to scoop a critical pot that put him in second place.

A new group of players (along with some faces from yesterday) will be in action today, hoping to join those that have already punched a ticket to Sunday's Day 2.  Everything about the structure will be the same, with players sitting down to starting stacks of 30,000 units.  Levels for this opening flight will be (50) minutes, with a transition to (60) minutes, once Day 2 begins.  Registration is open from the moment the cards get in the air, to the end of Level 12 (which is two levels into Day 2).  There is no dinner break today, just (10) minute breaks (every two levels), with action wrapping up just after 9:30pm.

Official Flight 1A chip count will be posted to begin today's live blogged coverage, followed by our first look at players in today's Flight 1B field.

Friday, March 23rd: $1,500 NLH Championship Continues With Flight 1B, With Final Satellite In The Evening

ICMYI: Event #14 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship $500,000 GTD) started yesterday afternoon, with a large group of players trying to earn themselves a couple of days off.  The field was a mixture of satellite winners (Matthew Yorra, Izzy Patel, Jeff Kessler, and Nancy Thomas), tournament regulars (Kenneth Bruno, Donald Williams, Rodney Moret-Rojas, and Frank Scala), and those we don't see very often (Victor Figueroa, Jake Schwartz, Matt Smith, Joshua Hillock, Keith Nassetta).  After eight levels of open registration, the field would close with (80) total entries, of which (27) players would reach the bagging process.  Scott Levitt (Delray Beach, FL) had a roller coaster day, as he grabbed the early chip lead...dropped down below chip average in the middle of the day...and reclaimed the overall lead on one of the final hands of play.  Levitt ended up bagging 199,100, which helped him earn the chip lead bonus (and Event #18 seat), along with TJ Shulman (155,100).  An official list of Flight 1A chip counts can be found by clicking here.

The second to last satellite for Event #14 ran last night (6:00pm), with an (8) seat guarantee on the tournament.  The numbers were very strong for the event, as registration closed with (114) entries.  That meant that (11) seats would be awarded, with a twelfth place spot earning a cash prize.  Listed below, are the official results from the $175 No Limit Hold'em Satellite:
  1. Evan Kahan (Event #14 Seat)
  2. Feguener Gay (Event #14 Seat)
  3. Robert Chusid (Event #14 Seat)
  4. Tercy Shadrach (Event #14 Seat)
  5. Ariel Williams (Event #14 Seat)
  6. Lawrence Paden (Event #14 Seat)
  7. Bret Grebow (Event #14 Seat)
  8. Jonathan Ounjian (Event #14 Seat)
  9. Tuan Phan (Event #14 Seat)
  10. Scott Bailey (Event #14 Seat)
  11. Diane Linke (Event #14 Seat)
  12. Antonio Campbell ($600 Cash)
Tournaments: Event #14 continues this afternoon, with Flight 1B beginning at 12:00pm.  Players in the flight will be sitting down to starting stacks of 30,000 units.  Play for the three opening flights will have levels of (50) minutes, transitioning to (60) minutes on Day 2.  The day is scheduled to end after Level 10, with registration not only open throughout the flight, but into Day 2 play.  The registration window for Event #14 will close after Level 12, which is just over an hour into the start of Day 2.  Live coverage of the Championship Event will begin when the first card is pitched, and will continue through the bagging process.

The final Event #14 satellite sits in the 6:00pm time slot, as players can try to parlay a $175 buy-in, into a championship seat.  The satellite guarantees (8) seats, but after what we saw last night, it should be no surprise if more than the posted number are awarded.  The event is structured with starting stacks of 12,00 units, and levels that last (20) minutes (with registration open through Level 8, and the break that follows).

Promotions: From (9:00am-10:00am), the high hand will award $150 every (30) minutes.  The high hands will then transition from 10:00am-12:00am (midnight), with the opportunity to win $400 every (30) minutes.  During that period, the promotion sees tournament players eligible (Isle Open events not eligible for high hand) each half-hour for $100 high hands, 2/2 limit hold'em players eligible for $200 high hands, 2/4 limit hold'em players eligible for $300 high hands, and all other raked games (1/2-5/10 NLH, 4/8 Omaha 8B, 6/12 O.E., etc.) eligible for $400 high hands.  From 12:00am-9:00am, players are eligible for $100 high hands every hour.

It should also be noted that started back on November 1st, players are able to win the high hand using only one card in their hand!!!  The payouts for those that use one card are different than the standard numbers listed above, and can be found (full listing of one-card payouts on flyers in the poker room).
