Isle Open Event 15 (Day 2): It's Six-Handed After Francklin Michel's Departure In 7th Place ($5,896)

2017 Isle Open | Event #15
$1,100 No Limit Hold'em | $150,000 GTD
Level 24 (Blinds 10,000/20,000/3,000)
Total Event 15 Entries: 180
Players Remaining: 6

Francklin Michel's (Miami, FL) magical carpet ride ended short of his ultimate goal, but he doubled his lifetime earnings with this result alone.

Just like Ido Ashkenazi before him, Francklin Michel (Miami, FL) did a noble job at the final table, surviving with a sub-twenty big blind stack for hours.  Michel came back from the last break with less than five bigs, and after getting involved in a pot without committing his full stack, he'd be left with just two ante.  Michel got those remaining chips in, and had to watch a K 9 5 9♣ 7 runout, with Sheldon Gross and Justin Harvell checking it down.  Harvey ended up making a flush on the river, but even his king-high was good against Michel's J♠ 8♣.

Franklin's career earnings coming into this tournament were just over $2,611, so to say that this tournament was a highlight for his resume, would be an understatement.  The final table is now six-handed, with Noel Atherley and Justin Harvell leading the way.

Isle Open Event 15 (Day 2): Marchese Loses A Big Flip, Out In 8th Place ($5,185)

2017 Isle Open | Event #15
$1,100 No Limit Hold'em | $150,000 GTD
Level 24 (Blinds 10,000/20,000/3,000)
Total Event 15 Entries: 180
Players Remaining: 7

Joseph Marchese (Coral Springs, FL) had done well to chip up towards the end of Level 23, but found himself flipping for his tournament life, just a few hands into Level 24.

Action at the final table would fold around to Noel Atherley on the button, who raised to 50,000.  Joseph Marchese was next to act in the small blind, and he'd three-bet shove for just over 400,000.  Brian Hastings would release his hand (in the big blind), and Atherley quickly made the call, with the two players flipping for a sizable pot.

Marchese held a slim lead with 5 5 against Atherley's A♣ K, but that quickly changed after the K♣ 3♣ 4♣ flop.  The A on the turn brought Marchese extra outs to a wheel, but he'd whiff the river, exiting the final table in eight place ($5,185).

  2. Noel Atherley - 700,000 (35bb)
  3. Joseph Marchese - 470,000 (23bb)
  4. Brian Hastings - 188,000 (9bb)
  5. Rob Jonsson - 290,000 (14bb)
  6. Justin Harvell - 960,000 (48bb)

Isle Open Event 15 (Day 2): Too Many Outs For Ido, Eliminated By Sheldon Gross In 9th Place ($4,493)

2017 Isle Open | Event #15
$1,100 No Limit Hold'em | $150,000 GTD
Level 23 (Blinds 8,000/16,000/2,000)
Total Event 15 Entries: 180
Players Remaining: 8

Ido Ashkenazi (Queens, NY) did an excellent job to stay alive as long as he did at the final table, considering he started with the shortest stack...by far.

Not only was Ido Ashkenazi (Queens, NY) surviving at the final table, he began to build his stack, which was less than eight big blinds when the ten players redrew.  Ido was up to 275,000, and would shove a 5 7♠ 8♠ flop, heads up with Sheldon Gross.  After finding out the exact amount, Gross would make the call, with the two fairly close in terms of percentages.

Sheldon watched as Ido turned over Q♠ 6♠, and followed by tabling 10 10, needing to fade a lot of outs on the turn and river.  The 2 on the turn strengthened Sheldon's slim lead, with the 3 on the river sealing Ashkenazi's fate.  Sheldon stood up and raised his hands in celebration, knowing how big the moment was for him.  If Gross was to lose the hand, he would have been left with less than five big blinds, as the two were that close in chip counts.

Level 22 (Blinds 6,000/12,000/2,000)
Total Event 15 Entries: 180
Players Remaining: 9

Jacob Snider (Plantation, FL) ran into the chip leader's (Rob Jonsson) pocket kings, and would end up the first player eliminated from the final table.

Jacob Snider (Plantation, FL) returned from break as the second shortest stack at the final table, and after watching Ido Ashkenazi (the short stack) get an all-in through, he picked his spot to try and do the same.  Jacob ran into some resistance from the chip leader though, who woke up with pocket kings.  Rob Jonsson's  K K♠ was well ahead the A♣ Jof Snider, and while there was a little sweat on the Q♠ 8 9♣ J♣ 8 runout, Jacob's outs to win never amounted.

Snider earned $3,815 for his tenth place finish, recording his first tournament cash since this same event during the Florida State Poker Championships (Event #14 | $1,100 No Limit Hold'em | 29th Place - $1,914).

Players Remaining: 10

Claudio Piedrabuena (Argentina) was down to three big blinds, and while he was able to get those chips in ahead, the river would be unkind.

After the elimination of Brandon Ageloff (12th Place), the Event #15 field would be on the final table bubble.  Claudio Piedrabuena, who was the shortest stack remaining (with less than five bigs), got his chips in good against Brian Hastings.  Claudio's A♠ Q♣ was dominating the A 10of Hastings, and after the 9 7♠ 2♣ 4 runout, he'd need only to fade a ten on the river.  Unfortunately for Piedrabuena, his hopes of doubling up would be dashed, as one of the three remaining tens arrived on the river.  Claudio would earn his first ever Isle Poker tournament result, taking home $3,815 for his eleventh place finish.

The remaining players then went through their last redraw of the evening, with the seating assignments for the final table listed below:
  1. Ido Ashkenazi
  2. Francklin Michel
  3. Noel Atherley
  4. Jacob Snider
  5. Joseph Marchese
  6. Brian Hastings
  7. Rob Jonsson

Play continues to be fourteen-handed, as the field now pushes four hours (real time) without an elimination.  While the number has stayed steady, there was a noticeable uptick in action during the first level back from dinner, with Kenneth Bruno the biggest mover.  Bruno was able to double through Brian Hastings, and with the help of a few extra pots, has run up his stack from 180,000 to 560,000.

Isle Open Event 15 (Day 2): Marchese Doubles Through James Salmon

2017 Isle Open | Event #15

Level 20 (Blinds 4,000/8,000/1,000)
Total Event 15 Entries: 180
Players Remaining: 14

Joseph Marchese (Coral Springs, FL) had been grinding a below average stack for most of the day, but now sits with a very manageable stack.

Joseph Marchese opened the action at Table 1 from under-the-gun, with players folding around to James Salmon, who was in the big blind.  Salmon decided to three-bet shove, as Marchese only started the hand with 150,000 (less than twenty bigs).  Marchese would make the call, and we'd have our first player at risk in almost three hours (real time).

It would be the JJ of Marchese against Salmon's 9♠ 9, with the board running out K♠ Q♠ 2 2♠ 5, securing the double for Marchese.  Joseph chipped up to 300,000, eclipsing the chip average for the first time in recent memory.

Joseph Marchese - 310,000
James Salmon - 200,000

Noel Atherley (Lantana, FL) reaching this point in the tournament is enough of a story, having bought into the tournament.  How he got close to 500,000 is another tale altogether.

With only six players buying into the tournament this morning, the odds were pretty slim that one of them would reach the money...let alone be the chip leader in Level 17.  Noel Atherley sat down with his 20,000 starting stack just over four hours ago, and now leads the remaining (19) players, with 525,000.

About twenty minutes ago, Atherley and Scott Zakheim were heads up in a pot, heading to the river.  The board read Q♣ 10 9 2, and with already over 280,000 in the pot, the dealer would place down the 8 on the river.  "I'm all-in," Atherley said...but it wasn't his action.  Zakheim was first to act, and after Scott let Noel know that it wasn't his turn, Atherley replied with an interesting comment.

"I'm just trying to throw you for a loop," Noel would say, hinting that he may have purposely acted out of turn.  Now the two players were chatting throughout the hand, but Scott would want a ruling from the floor, regarding the action if he checked.  Tournament Director Ralph Brandt informed both players that if Scott checked, Atherley's all-in would be binding.  With that being known, Scott went all-in for his last 80,000.  Noel quickly made the call, and after Scott tabled 9♠ 9♣, Atherley showed his A Q(having rivered the nuts).

The 430,000 pot was the largest to this point in the tournament, but also cost Noel some time away from the table.  He was given an orbit penalty for acting out of turn, leaving the table to discuss whether they thought Atherley acted with intention (when announcing himself all-in).

Noel Atherley - 525,000

Total Event 15 Entries: 180
Players Remaining: 23

James Salmon (Davie, FL) gives the quick thumbs up before heading to break, just moments after eliminating Martin Culotta, and sending Event #15 into the money.

The action at Table 3 would begin with Martin Cullota opening, and players folding to James Salmon in late position.  Salmon would three-bet to 15,000, and with action back on Martin, he would four-bet to 44,000.  The rest of the players at the table could sense something big happening, as everyone's focus was intently on Salmon's next move.  James chose to five-bet shove for 200,000 (covering Culotta), with Martin snap-calling, quickly turning over K♠ K.  Salmon tabled A K♣, and would be behind...but only for a few moments.  James would flop and ace, and after the board paired with another ace on the turn, Culotta would be drawing dead.

Salmon assumes the chip lead with the massive pot, now sitting with close to 380,000.  Players were then notified that they would be heading on break, returning after fifteen minutes to Level 16 (1,500/3,000/400).  Once the tables are occupied again, we will bring you updated chip counts from the field.

Isle Open Event 15 (Day 2): Field On The Money Bubble, No Break Until It Bursts

Players are now one elimination from the money, as Setty Viralam was sent home by Noel Atherley, when Setty's 9 9♠ couldn't hold against Noel's A J♠ (on a K♠ Q♣ 8 10♣ Q♠ runout).  Just a few hands later, Steve McKoy would be eliminated by James Salmon, as McKoy's 8♠ 8♣ ran into the A A♣ of Salmon.  The remaining field was supposed to go on break in two minutes, but will wait until the bubble bursts to step away from the tables.  Play is now hand-for-hand, with two minutes removed from the clock after every hand played.

After the next elimination, everyone remaining afterwards will be assured at least $1,646, but all eyes are on the $44,916 first place prize.

The Day 2 field is now just one elimination away from experiencing the first of three redraws today.  The field will redraw when (27) players remain, then once again when (18) players remain, and a last time at the final table.  The has been slight movement at the top of the leaderboard since the beginning of play, most notably from Ido Ashkenazi.  Also climbing the ranks is Brandon Ageloff, who came into Day 2 with 74,000.  After two hours of play, Brandon has almost quadrupled that number, and currently sits with 290,000.

Brandon has one 2017 Isle Open trophy to his name already, winning Event #6 of the series ($100 No Limit Hold'em) for $2,255.  Ageloff is one of a group of players we've featured this series, that is in the midst of their best statistical year of tournament poker.  With over $180,500 in earnings to this point, Brandon has almost $140,000 more in cashes this year, than any other in his career.

Isle Open Event 15 (Day 2): Ashkenazi Wins Almost (200+) Big Blind Pot

Ido Ashkenazi (Queens, NY) had to shed his signature sunglasses after Qasim Jamhour shoved the flop, perplexed with how he could be beat in that spot.

It didn't take too long for the pot of the day to play out, as Qasim Jamhour and Ido Ashkenazi just got involved in a pot worth close to 300,000.  In a raised pot, the two players would see a J♣ 10♠ 6 flop, with Ashkenazi checking the action over to Jamhour.  Now Jamhour had turned his 24,600 Day 2 starting stack into over 100,000, and he'd continue with a bet of 8,200.

Ido then chose to check-raise to 21,500, but would be visibly shocked when Qasim announced that he was all-in, for close to eighty percent of Ashkenazi's stack.  After taking his glasses off and standing up, Ido talked out the hand to himself, and eventually sat down to make the call.  He'd watch Qasim turn over Q 9, and would follow by tabling his J 10.  Ido's top two pair would need to do some fading to win this massive pot, but when the turn and river brought running aces, he'd clench his fist in celebration.

Jamhour waited to make sure that Ido had him covered...which he did...and Qasim started to make the long walk out of the tournament area.  Ido is now the tournament's chip leader, sitting with just over 320,000.
