Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Closing The Action, Final Level Of Day 1C

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 12 (Blinds 1,000/2,000/300)
Total Day 1C Entries: 178

Walter Strakowski (West Palm Beach, FL) is in the running to bag the Day 1C chip lead.

Play has entered the last level of the day (Level 12), with the bagging process beginning about an hour from now.  Walter Strakowski (West Palm Beach, FL) was one of the chip leaders after dinner, and continues to sit in the top five on the leaderboard.  Walter has recorded four cashes this year, with the last coming in February (WSOP Circuit at Palm Beach Kennel Club).  Strakowski has over $102,000 in lifetime tournament earnings, including a WSOP Circuit ring won back in 2010.

Once the bagging process is completed, and the tournament staff has verified all of the numbers, we will post the end of Day 1C chip counts (followed by Day 2 seating assignments).

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Newman Runs Kings Into Al Gomez's Aces

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 11 (Blinds 800/1,600/200)
Total Day 1C Entries: 178

Al Gomez (Miami, FL) watches as the dealer cuts down his stack, verifying that he has more than Michael Newman.

Al Gomez was trending in the right direction since dinner, but made a speculative call against Michael Newman (about fifteen minutes ago), that would cost him close to half his stack.  Al was recoup those chips (plus more) just moments ago, as the two players got it all-in pre-flop, for a pot worth close to 170,000.  Gomez held a big lead with A A♣ against Michael's K♠ K, with the 8♣ 4 10♠ 5♣ 6♣ runout solidifying things for Gomez.  Newman would be left to decide whether he's going to make another attempt at bagging chips this evening, while Al rockets up the leaderboard (no pun intended).

Al Gomez - 166,000 (103bb)

Players are now heading on their final break of the night, and will be returning to Level 11, and new blinds of 800/1,600/200.

Bernie Lubitz (Stuart, FL) has a gap that's now over two years between recorded tournament cashes, but is a favorite to make Day 2, and potentially change that stat tomorrow.

The Day 1C field is now down to (70) players, with one of the most outer tables breaking just moments ago (Table 15).  At the conclusion of this level (Level 10), those that are still active in the field, will head on their final (15) minute break.  Once back in action, there will be two more levels remaining in the night, with the bagging process beginning at the conclusion of Level 12.  Listed below are updated counts from the field, along with a list of notable players still alive.

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): It's Gotta Feel Like A Freeroll For Pass

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 9 (Blinds 500/1,000/100)
Total Day 1C Entries: 165

Woodrow Pass (Seffner, FL) experienced every poker player's nightmare earlier today, as a significant amount of cash fell from his pocket...and was nowhere to be found when he realized it.

As we passed Table 4, Woodrow Pass (Seffner, FL) and Avery Bass were involved in a hand, both looking at a 10 9♣ 8 flop.  Bass had checked to Pass, who bet 5,000, with Avery then check-raising to 15,000.  Woodrow was having none of it though, as he quickly announced that he was all-in, having Bass well covered.  Close to seventy-percent of Bass's stack was committed in the hand, but after getting the clock called on him, Avery would release his hand.  Bass was left with just over 10,000 after the hand, while Woodrow Pass chipped up to 105,000.

While reaching the century would normally be the story for a player at this point in the day...it's second to what happened to Woodrow earlier.  About two hours before dinner, Pass was looking to get involved in one of the single-hand "flips" that was running, and grabbed some money from his pocket.  Less than ten minutes later, Pass realized that the money he had in his pocket (close to $2,000) was gone.  It was nowhere in sight, and after recovery efforts were fruitless...Woodrow chalked it up as a loss.  Just a few minutes before dinner, one of the supervisors from the poker floor informed Pass that his money was recovered, to Woodrow's surprise.  The rest of the night is now a free roll for Pass, who basically gave up on the money just a few hours earlier.

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Updated Chips From The Field

Level 8 (Blinds 400/800/100)
Total Day 1C Entries: 162

Sean Perry (Encinitas, CA) had a difficult time deciding between cash and tournament earlier, but since focusing on this event, he's vaulted up the leaderboard.

Players have returned from dinner, and the cards are once again in the air, with five more levels left in the night.  After hopping back-and-forth between cash and tournament, Sean Perry (Encinitas, CA) chose the latter, and managed to amass a chip leading stack before dinner.  Perry is coming off a deep run in last week's WPT event at Best Bet (Jacksonville), where he finished in 29th place, earning $8,839.  Perry is pushing the 200,000 mark, but has a handful of players that are not far behind him.

Sean Perry - 170,000
Walt Strakowski - 165,000
Ivan Starostin - 150,000
Joel Deutsch - 125,000

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Players Heading On Dinner Break (6:25-7:25pm)

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 8 (Blinds 400/800/100)
Total Day 1C Entries: 158

A little surf and turf action from Farraddays Steakhouse, located on the second floor of the casino, adjacent to the poker room.

Day 1C players are heading on their hour long dinner break, which will last from 6:25-7:25pm.  Once the cards are back in the air for Level 8, the blinds will be 400/800/100, with a chip average just under 47,000 (58bb).  Live blogged coverage will continue with updated chip counts from the field, once players are seated back at the tables.

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Starostin Reaches The Century Mark

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 7 (Blinds 300/600/75)
Total Day 1C Entries: 149

Ivan Starostin (Aventura, FL) was able to check the turn, after making two-pair, which may have helped him get value on the river.

Action at Table 9 was picked up pre-flop, with Ivan Starostin (Aventura, FL) opening to 2,300, to which three players made the call.  After the A♠ 8♣ J♣ flop Starostin would lead for 5,000, with only Joseph Marchese making the call.  The two players then went check-check after the Q on the turn, with Starostin betting again on the river (3♠), this time for 15,000.  Marchese mumbled to himself before tossing in a call, only the see Ivan table A Q♣.

Starostin checked the turn when he made top-two pair, which may have helped him get called on the river.  Regardless of intention, Starostin is climbing the leaderboard, now up to 105,000.

Ivan Starostin - 105,000 (175bb)

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Updated Chip Counts Post-Break

Miguel Cabrera (Minneola, FL) returned from the second break of the day at the Day 1C chip leader.

Day 1C players are now a few minutes removed from their second break of the day, with the landscape of the leaderboard beginning to take shape.  The current chip leader is Miguel Cabrera (Minneola, FL), who sits with just under 100,000.  We did see a couple of players get off to hot starts (Nagui Yassa and Avery Bass), but neither has been able to keep up that same momentum.

Miguel Cabrera - 97,000
Nagui Yassa - 80,000
Gil George - 70,000
David Inselberg - 70,000
Charlemagne Benjamin - 65,000
Avery Bass - 65,000
Robert Jonsson - 60,000
Alex Rocha - 60,000

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Turyansky Looking For The Tournament "Treble"

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 5 (Blinds 200/400/50)
Total Day 1C Entries: 137

Alex Turyansky (Saarbrucken, Germany) has back-to-back wins on his Hendon Mob resume (last two results), and is looking to add a third this Monday.

Just like Dominique Mosley earlier, Alex Turyansky (Saarbrucken, Germany) is a player who is very particular about what tournaments he plays.  Considering the wins that could be had in a game like 10/25 NLH (and higher), certain tournaments just don't offer a return like that.  Turyansky has played a couple of tournaments recently though, both of which he ended up winning.  Alex shipped the $10,000 No Limit Hold'em (Event #17) during the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open ($334,176), and followed that up with an Isle Open title in the $2,500 No Limit Hold'em (Single-Day) event just last week ($46,139).

Alex joined this Day 1C field during the last level, and joins a large group of late arriving players to the tournament:

Al Gomez
Greg Lehn
Rafael Reis
Brandon Ageloff
Robert Jonsson
Evan Teitelbaum
Richard Rice
Erik Nomberg
Richard Leger
Henry Meacham
James Brinkley
Samuel Ganzfried
Maury Barrett
Erik Christensen
Robert Transue

Players are about to head on their second break of the day (at the end of this level), returning to Level 5, and new blinds of 250/500/50 (36,600 chip average).  There will then be two more levels played, before those still remaining head on an hour long dinner break.

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): @The_Alex_Rocha In The House

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 5 (Blinds 200/400/50)
Total Day 1C Entries: 122

Alex Rocha (S. Setauket, NY) worked super hard to get where he is now, with over $1,858,000 in career earnings, and one of the most consistent tournament players in the community.

Alex Rocha (S. Setauket, NY) is another in the group of players we've seen arrive at the Isle Poker Room for the first time, during these opening days of the $1,500 Isle Open Championship ($500,000 GTD).  Rocha may not be a familiar name to followers of this blog, but he's a household name in the tournament poker community.

Rocha broke out on the scene in January of 2011, when he won the opening event of the Borgata Poker Open, besting a field of 1,472 entries.  It was the second recorded tournament win of his career, and came just a month after he won his first WSOP Circuit ring.  The result was worth a shade over $150,000, and looked to be a springboard of a special career.  The next few years weren't as smooth for Alex though, as he continually put himself in position for big scores, but found himself falling just short.  Now falling short still meant five-figure results on numerous occasions, which for most players would be considered a success, but Rocha knew he was capable of bigger things.

Then came 2016, a year that he would earn over $696,000 in tournament cashes, including two six-figure scores.  Alex finished third in the WSOP Circuit Main Event at the Horseshoe in Baltimore ($133,140), and won the $3,500 No Limit Hold'em ($1,000,000 GTD) event at Venetian that September ($173,861).  Rocha has continued the success this year, with over $400,000 in earnings to this point, including a runner-up in the WSOP Circuit Main Event in Atlantic City ($72,730).  He would also add some Florida results to his resume, finishing third in Event #9 ($570 No Limit Hold'em) of the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown ($107,961).

Rocha now has over $1,858,000 in lifetime earnings, and has been in the top (30) in "number of cashes" (in the world) for the past three years.  It's safe to say that Alex is reaching the goals he's set for himself, but knows that even bigger things likely lie ahead.

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Yassa Already Over The Century Mark, Leaves Brian Schaffer With Dust

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 4 (Blinds 150/300/50)
Total Day 1C Entries: 118

Nagui Yassa (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) is just one of numerous players to have been featured this series, that are in the midst of their best statistical year of tournament poker.

Nagui Yassa (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) could be playing some of the best tournament poker of his life, with recent results to prove that.  Just over a month ago, Nagui almost bested a field of 1,612 entries in the opening event of the WSOP Circuit at Hard Rock ($580 No Limit Hold'em), finishing in fourth place for $46,974.  It was Yassa's largest lifetime cash, and the most significant numbers for Nagui since a cash in 2009 at Bellagio ($32,683).

Yassa is looking for his second major title, and is currently off to a great start in this flight.  While the action leading up to his double isn't known, we did pass Table 8 as the dealer was cutting out his stack of more than 60,000.  He held 8 5 on a 8♠ 8♣ 7 4 J board, besting the Q Q♣ of Brian Schaffer, and winning a pot worth close to 130,000.  Schaffer would be left with just a few blinds in front of him, and was eliminated the very next hand.

Nagui Yassa - 128,000 (433bb)

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Avery Bass Off To Quick Start, With Field Heading On First Break

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 4 (Blinds 150/300/50)
Total Day 1C Entries: 94

Avery Bass (Atlantic Beach, FL) is just over a year removed from his last five-figure score, chopping Event #9 ($360 No Limit Hold'em) of last year's Isle Open ($49,363).

The timing was perfect as we passed by Table 4, as a big pot was playing out between Avery Bass, James Orphanos, and Andrew Morales.  The players were on the turn of a board reading K♠ 10♠ 9♣ 4♣, with Orphanos firing out a bet of 7,000 (into a pot over 12,000).  Andrew Morales made the call, with both players watching as Avery Bass announced himself all-in.  After getting a better idea of what it would cost him to call (approximately 39,000 more), Orphanos tossed his hand into the muck.

"You're going to bet out for 7,000 and then fold," Morales said Orphanos, just moments before tossing his hand into the muck.  Bass would flash his hand (Q♣ J) as the dealer was pushing him the pot, having flopped a straight.

Avery Bass - 80,000 (266bb)

Players are about to take their first break of the day, and will be returning to Level 4, with new blinds of 150/300/50 (32,100 chip average).

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Mosley Makes Rare Tournament Appearance

2017 Isle Open | Event #21
$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 3 (Blinds 100/200/25)
Total Day 1C Entries: 92

Dominique Mosley (Miami, FL) isn't often in the tournament fields here at the Isle, with a majority of his hours dedicated to cash.

The 10/25 NLH game is a fixture game on Saturday mornings, usually getting the cards in the air before most of us are still sleeping.  Usually a staple in the game (not necessarily the weekend morning installment), Dominique Mosley (Miami, FL) has passed chosen the tournament tables this afternoon.  Dominique plays in only a handful of Isle Poker tournaments each year, but he has been putting in some tournament volume as of late.

Mosley is coming off a deep run in the WPT $5,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event at Best Bet (Jacksonville), where he finished in 22nd place ($12,040).  Just a month before that, Dominique also went deep in the WSOP Circuit $1,675 Main Event at Hard Rock Hollywood, finishing in 27th place for $8,041.  In total, Mosley has over $455,000 in career tournament earnings, with his first recorded result coming in 2009.

Dominique headlines the first group of notables in the field, joining the following names:

Sheddy Siddiqui
Christopher Bolek
Daniel Pearlman
James Brinkley
David Inselberg
Ory Hen
Charlemagne Benjamin
Steven McKoy
James Salmon
Elliot Zaydman
Ido Ashkenazi
Scott Zakheim

Isle Open Championship (Day 1C): Last Night's Satellite Results, Winners Already In The Field

$1,500 No Limit Hold'em Isle Open Championship| $500,000 GTD
Level 2 (Blinds 75/150/50)
Total Day 1C Entries: 76

Preecha Taepakdee (Boynton Beach, FL) is one of the twelve players to have won a seat in last night's $175 No Limit Hold'em Super Satellite Into Event #21 ($1,500 Isle Open Championship).

As would be expected, the numbers in Level 2 are already much higher than that of the starting days that proceeded this one, with (76) entries in the field to this point.  While the $170 No Limit Hold'em "Turbo" Satellite into this Isle Open Championship is winding down (they just reached the final table), we will take a look at the results from the final evening satellite that was run (last night).  The satellite guarantee ten seats into this event, but ended up with a larger field than expected, and awarded eleven seats (and cash).

Preecha Taepakdee was one of those satellite winners, and happens to already be seated in today's field.  Preecha is a tournament grinder with over $126,000 in live earnings, but he's searching for his first five-figure score since 2014.  A deep run in this event would surely be a career highlighting score for Taepakdee, as would it the others to have won seats in last night's satellite (listed below).
  1. Peter Fellows ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  2. Anna Dikker ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  3. Jose Cabrera ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  4. Larry Stoddard ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  5. Lawrence Smith ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  6. Roberto Castro ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  7. Gunther Rowohlt ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  8. Preecha Taepakdee ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  9. Julio Cesar Ruiz ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  10. Steve Varela ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  11. Steven Zukowski ($1,500 Isle Open Championship Seat)
  12. Chad Vetstein ($1,050)

Day 1C of the 2017 Isle Open $1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship is about to see the first cards pitched, with Tournament Director Ralph Brandt currently finishing up the rules announcement.  Yesterday's Day 1B action wrapped up just before midnight, and saw a field of (113) entries size down to (23) players, once the bagging process was reached.  Joshua Kay (Boca Raton, FL) led the field with 365,100, which currently leads the combined group already having bagged chips for tomorrow's Day 2.

The combined Event #21 numbers (to this point) have a total of (205) entries, with (48) players already heading to Day 2.  The combined prize pool is $276,750, with (166) entries needed during today's action to reach the $500,000 guaranteed number.

There would be a total of (113) entries in Day 1B, with (23) players bagging chips for tomorrow's Day 2.  Joshua Kay (Boca Raton, FL) would bag the Day 1B chip lead (365,100), which also happens to be leading number of the combined Day 2 field (to this point).  Other notable names to book tickets to Sunday's festivities included Ryandy Spain (231,000), Nancy Birnbaum (200,000), Joshua Beckley (168,200), Brian Hastings (133,900), and Jeremy Meacham (131,100).
