Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)

Isaiah Goldman (Princeton, NJ) 2nd Place - $97,511

There was a quick discussion of a possible deal when heads-up play started, but once the players heard the numbers, they decided to play on.  Only three hands into heads-up play, Isaiah Goldman (Princeton, NJ) would be all-in and at risk.  After Goldman raised the button and Novak defended, the two would see the dealer fan out a flop of 6♠ 4♠ A♣.  Novak checked, and watched as Goldman put together a bet of 250,000.  Edward would then check raise to 700,000, to which Goldman snap shoved all-in...Novak quickly called:

Flop: 6♠ 4♠ A♣

Goldman: A 8
Novak: 6 4

Turn: J♣
River: Q

Goldman felt great about his hand until the cards were tabled, and he saw that he would need help on the turn or river to double up and stay alive.  The saying is "always the bridesmaid, but never the bride," but we're sure that the second $98,000 score for runner-up (finished second to Panzica in this year's FSPC Main Event) will help ease the disappointment.  Goldman congratulates Novak before walking away from the table, and does so with a big smile on his face.  We have now crowned our 2016 Isle Poker Open Main Event champion, Edward Novak!!

The counts as heads-up play begins:
  1. Edward Novak - 10,210,000
  2. Isaiah Goldman - 3,770,000

Event 13 (Day 3): 3rd Place - Gambino ($63,225)

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 27 (Blinds 30,000/60,000/10,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 2
Chip Average: 6,990,000

AJ Gambino (Royerdford, PA) 3rd Place - $63,225

AJ Gambino (Royerdford, PA) would return from break with just over (10) big blinds, and after he chopped his first all-in with Edward Novak (both holding the same hand), he'd be all-in and at risk against the same opponent (very next hand):

Gambino: Q♣ 2♣
Novak: A 10♣

Runout: K 8♠ 3♠ 9 A♠

Gambino lost a crucial flip against Isaiah Goldman moments before break (A♠ K♣ < 10♠ 10♣), and he just wasn't able to spin that short stack up returning from break.  Gambino would wish the two remaining players good luck, and collect his third largest tournament cash of his career ($63,225).

Event 13 (Day 3): Three Handed Chip Counts At Break

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 28  (Blinds 40,000/80,000/10,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 4
Chip Average: 3,500,000

Players are on another (15) minute break, and will return to Level 28, and new blinds of 40,000/80,000/10,000.

  1. AJ Gambino - 1,000,000 (12 BB)
  2. Edward Novak - 9,600,000 (120 BB)
  3. Isaiah Goldman - 3,300,000 (41 BB)

Event 13 (Day 3): 4th Place - Panzica ($44,037)

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 27 (Blinds 30,000/60,000/10,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 3
Chip Average: 4,660,000

Sam Panzica (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) 4th Place - $44,037

As the day played out, and Sam Panzica (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) continued to outlast player after player, there was just a sense that he was a favorite to win.  Coming off a two "major" wins, including a WPT this month, Sam would fall just a few spots short of that infamous "treble."  Panzica would open from the button to 125,000, and after Gamino folded his small blind, Edward Novak would three-bet to 345,000.  After a few moments of though, Panzica announced himself all-in, to which Novak would ask for the exact count (2,350,000).  Novak made the call and we would have Panzica at risk once the cards were tabled:

Panzica: K♠ J♠
Novak: Q♠ Q

Runout: Q 5 K A 2♣

Sam would quietly mutter his displeasure about the flop, but the turn would actually give him four outs to a win.  The deuce was not one of those outs, and the 2016 Florida State Poker Championship Main Event winner would be eliminated in fourth place ($44,037).

Event 13 (Day 3): 5th Place - Nguyen ($31,770)

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 27 (Blinds 30,000/60,000/10,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 4
Chip Average: 3,500,000

Alex Nguyen (Coral Springs, FL) 5th Place - $31,770

Only two hands after Nguyen doubled up Sam Panzica, Isaiah Goldman would limp from the button after folds from Gambino and Novak.  After Sam folded his small blind, Alex Nguyen (Coral Springs, FL) shoved his (12) big blind stack.  Goldman was seemingly expecting that exact action to pan out, as he snap-called and the hands were tabled:

Nguyen: Q♠ 5♠
Goldman: A K♣

Runout: 9♠ 4 8 3 2♠

While Alex held two live cards, he couldn't find any help from the runout.  Alex, a regular here at the Isle, earns himself the largest tournament score of his career ($31,770).  Play is now four-handed, with just over (15) minutes remaining on the clock.

Event 13 (Day 3): Panzica Doubles Through Nguyen

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 27 (Blinds 30,000/60,000/10,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 5
Chip Average: 2,800,000

Sam Panzica would open from the hijack to 125,000, followed by Alex Nguyen three-betting to 300,000 on the button.  The blinds would fold behind, and after Sam assessed Alex's stack, he would announce himself all-in.  Alex quickly threw in some chips for the call, and the hands would be tabled:

Panzica: K♠ J♠
Nguyen: A Q

Runout: J 8 6♠ 2 5♠

Nguyen would take the lead to the flop, but that's as long as it would last, as Sam flopped pair of jacks would hold up for the double.

Sam Panzica - 3,200,000 (53 BB)
Alex Nguyen - 700,000 (12 BB)

Event 13 (Day 3): Five Handed Chip Counts

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 27 (Blinds 30,000/60,000/10,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 5
Chip Average: 2,800,000

The stacks are super deep at the moment, with the shortest of the five players still sitting with over (23) big blinds.  We've seen a shift in the balance of power, as Alex Nguyen has slowly trended downwards, and now finds himself 4/5:

  1. Sam Panzica - 1,500,000
  2. Alex Nguyen - 1,800,000
  3. AJ Gambino - 4,100,000
  4. Edward Novak - 4,200,000
  5. Isaiah Goldman - 2,600,000

Event 13 (Day 3): Chip Counts From Break

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)

Players are currently on their third break of the day, and will be returning to Level 27, and new blinds of 30,000/60,000/10,000.  Here are the updated chip counts from break:

  1. Sam Panzica - 1,300,000
  2. Alex Nguyen - 3,200,000
  3. AJ Gambino - 4,600,000
  4. Edward Novak - 3,300,000
  5. Isaiah Goldman - 2,300,000

Event 13 (Day 3): 6th Place - Hillock ($25,479)

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 26 (Blinds 25,000/50,000/5,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 5
Chip Average: 2,800,000

Joshua Hillock (Orlando, FL) 6th Place - $25,479

Joshua Hillock (Orlando, FL) spent a good portion of his day with a below average stack, and although he was able to find a double on two separate occasions, he'd never get above (25) bigs.  After one of his shoves got through AJ Gambino (blind v. blind), Hillock would shove the next orbit from the hijack.  Gambino would iso-shove behind, and the blinds would fold behind:

Hillock: A 9♠
Gambino: A♠ A

Runout: 8♠ 7♣ 3 J♠ K♣

Hillock would find himself in terrible shape, but managed to have outs heading to the river.  He asked aloud for the ten to fall, but the cards would not comply.  Hillock would wish the rest of the table good luck, before collecting his things and headed to talk to his rail.

Event 13 (Day 3): 7th Place - Foley ($19,502)

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool

Players Remaining: 6
Chip Average: 2,300,000

Michael Foley (Belleville, MI) 7th Place - $19,502

Michael Foley's (Belleville, MI) day may have seemed like a bad dream, watching as his leads in crucial spots would be ripped away in dramatic fashion.  While he managed to navigate his stack over less than (10) bigs for a solid while, he chose a spot moments ago to try and double.  Action would fold around to Alex Nguyen on the button, who would open to 100,000.  "You've laid down to me so many times, do I think you'll do it one more time," Foley spoke aloud, directed towards Alex.  Michael would announce that he was all-in, and Nguyen made the call:

Foley: A♠ 5♠
Nguyen: Q 9♠

Runout: 6♣ 7 2 9 Q

"I knew it," Foley said, as the nine spiked on the turn and left him looking for one of the three remaining aces.  The queen would fall on the river, basically summing up Foley's day in a nutshell.  It started with a tough runout against Alfonso Perez, and ended with the same against Nguyen.

Event 13 (Day 3): Slowing Down Once Again

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 26 (Blinds 25,000/50,000/5,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 7
Chip Average: 2,000,000

Even though there are three player holding less than (20) big blinds, the action has slowed down considerably since Level 25.  We've had a few all-ins (Panzica and Foley), but no calls to report on.  Here are the updated chip counts midway through Level 26:
  1. Sam Panzica - 600,000
  2. Alex Nguyen - 3,000,000
  3. Josh Hillock - 1,200,000
  4. Michael Foley - 575,000
  5. AJ Gambino - 2,700,000
  6. Edward Novak - 3,300,000
  7. Iasaiah Goldman - 2,550,000

Event 13 (Day 3): Updated Counts At Break

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 26 (Blinds 25,000/50,000/5,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 7
Chip Average: 2,000,000

There was a lot of action that level, including some hands that didn't make it to the blog.  Sam Panzica had one foot out the door, but got a miracle three-outer on the river to stay alive, and double up against Michael Foley.  That wasn't the first time Foley took a brutal river beat, remember that Alfonso Perez went runner-diamonds to crack Michael's pocket aces during the first level of the day.  Here are the updated chip counts from break:
  1. Sam Panzica - 1,000,000
  2. Alex Nguyen - 2,500,000
  3. Josh Hillock - 820,000
  4. Michael Foley - 800,000
  5. AJ Gambino - 3,300,000
  6. Edward Novak - 3,400,000
  7. Isaiah Goldman - 2,200,000

Event 13 (Day 3): 8th Place - Perez ($13,840)

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 25 (Blinds 20,000/40,000/5,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 7
Chip Average:

Alfonso Perez (Coconut Creek, FL) 8th Place - $13,840

After a first level that saw Alfonso Perez play just a few hands, he became very active towards the middle stages of Level 25.  That activity saw his stack fluctuate greatly, and after doubling up Josh Hillock, he would find himself all-in the very next hand.  After Isaiah Goldman opened the pot, Perez shoved for just under 700,000, with action folding behind.  Goldman would quickly toss chips into the pot, signifying a call, and the hands would be tabled:

Perez: 7 7♣
Goldman: Q Q♣

Runout: J 3 10♠ Q♠ 8♠

Perez began to collect his things after the dealer fanned out the flop, and when the queen hit on the turn, it would be the end of his championship event.  The $13,840 that Perez earned for his finish happens to be the largest score of his career, and brings his total earnings to $118,000.  Let's not forget to mention that Perez was one of our $175 satellite winners!!!  Great return on investment!!

Level 25 (Blinds 20,000/40,000/5,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 8
Chip Average: 1,750,000

Paul Balzano (Sunrise, FL) 9th Place - $10,066

Paul Balzano (Sunrise, FL) was one of the least active players at the table, seemingly card dead since the beginning of play today.  After Josh Hillocks double, Balzano became the short stack at the table, hovering around the (10) big blind mark.

After action folded around to AJ Gambino (in the hijack), he would open the pot for a raise.  The button and small blind folded behind, and action would then be on Balzano.  Paul would three-bet ship for just over 500,000, and AJ quickly made the call:

Paul: A♠ 10♣
Gambino: J J♠

Runout: 3 9♠ 5♣ 5♠ Q

Bolzano would need help in order to stay alive in the tournament, but the runout would bring no help to his hand.  This would be Paul's second major final table of the month, having finished sixth in the WPT Bestbet Bounty three weeks ago ($64,183).

Event 13 (Day 3): Hillock Doubles First Hand Back

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)

Level 25 (Blinds 20,000/40,000/5,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 9
Chip Average: 1,553,000

It didn't take long for one of the shortest stacks to double, as Josh Hillock shoved from late position after action folded to him.  The button and small blind folded, but after taking a look at his hand, Edward Novak made the call.  Hillock was behind, holding K♣ 10 against Novak's A♣ Q♠, but the 2♠ Q 5 K&spades 2 runout would secure the double.

Edward Novak - 3,200,000
Josh Hillock - 750,000 (19BB)

Event 13 (Day 3): Break Time Updates

  9. Paul Balzano - 560,000

Event 13 (Day 3): 10th Place - Gianquitti ($7,549)

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)
$500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool
Level 24 (Blinds 15,000/30,000/5,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 9
Chip Average: 1,550,000

Ryan Gianquitti (Lake Worth, FL) 10th Place - $7,549

About (10) minutes before break, Ryan Gianquitti was all-in and as risk holding A Q against Alex Nguyen's A K.  Things looked pretty bleak for Ryan, but there would be a queen in the window, and he would survive and double up.  His (10) big blinds stack was now a manageable (25) bigs, and he could now focus on chipping up...rather than doubling up.  Only four hands later though, he would be out of the tournament.

AJ Gambino would open from early position to 65,000, with Edward Novak three-betting to 190,000, next to act.  Action folded around to Gianquitti, who would announce that he was all-in (for just under 700,000).  Gambino took a few minutes before folding, and after a quick peek back at his cards, Novak made the call:

Novak: K♠ K♣
Gianquitti: A♣ A

Runout: K 96 2♠ 4♣

Gianquitti would experience the variance that was just on his side minutes ago, and after Novak found his one-outer on the flop (Paul Balzano said he folded a king), Ryan would be collecting his $7,549.

Event 13 (Day 3): Alfonso Finds Runner Diamonds

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)

Level 24 (Blinds 15,000/30,000/5,000)
Total Entries: 466
Players Remaining: 10
Chip Average: 1,400,000

The dramatics started a little earlier as expected, as two of the bigger stacks found themselves with all of the chips in the middle.  Alfonso Perez would open from the hijack, and after the button and small blind folded, Michael Foley three-bet to 180,000.  Perez would make the call and the two would see a flop of Q 7 J.  Foley proceeded to lead out for 205,000, and after only a few moments, Perez would announce himself all-in (659,000).

After getting the exact count, and thinking for just a minute or so, Foley would place the chips in the pot for a call.

Flop: Q 7 J

Foley: A♠ A♣
Perez: A Q♣

Turn: 8
River: 3

The sweat was very real once the diamond came off on the turn, and Perez quietly asked the dealer, "One more of this please."  Alfonso would get his request, and Michael Foley would stand from the table...hands on head.

Michael Foley - 1,000,000
Anfonso Perez - 2,200,000

Ryan Gianquitti has been the only player to be all-in, but the two times he shoved (just over 10 big blinds), all of the players folded and he picked up blinds and antes.  Here are the updated chip counts from the middle of Level 24:

  1. Sam Panzica - 1,700,000
  2. Ryan Gianquitti - 330,000
  3. Alex Nguyen - 2,100,000

The only tournament table in the room

It shouldn't come as much of as surprise to see that things have started off very slow this afternoon.  We've seen a handful of flops over the course of the first (30) minutes, but not many of those hands are going to showdown.  It was mentioned earlier and we will remind you again, that with (75) minute levels and average players over (35) bigs deep, there is no real reason for any of these players to get "out of line."  The difference between tenth place and first is over $150,000, so until the stacks get shallower (or we get two big hands against each other), we should see a lot more of this for the next few hours.

Event 13 (Day 3): Final Table Getting Underway

The (10) players to have reached the final table are currently unbagging their chips, and after some paperwork is filled out, the cards will be in the air for Day 3.  While Paul Balzano and Ryan Gianquitte return with the short stacks, they are not yet forced into a position to "force the issue."  It should be noted than levels will be (75) minutes in length, transition from the hour long levels we were playing on Day 2.

The 2016 Isle Poker Open started on October 4th at 11:00am....now (27) days and (28) events later, the final table of the $1,500 Championship Event is upon us.  There are many storylines that emerged over the course of the last (48-72) hours, but nothing more compelling at the moment than Sam Panzica going for the "treble."  Sam's last two recorded cashes are outright wins in major events, one being the 2016 Florida State Poker Championships Main Event (hosted here at the Isle), and the other the 2016 WPT Bestbet Bounty Scramble.  Sam will be third in chips when play resumes at 1:00pm, but there are nine other players looking to make his quest for three in a row as difficult as possible.

Event 13 (Day 2): Bagging Up For The Night (Day 3 Chip Counts/Final Table Seating)

Event 13 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event)

The clock has been paused with 3:00 remaining in Level 3, as we have reached the final table of the 2016 Isle Poker Open Championship.  As we were reaching the later stages of Level 23, the field lost Bill Pilossoph (Presto, PA) in 12th place ($7,459), followed by Ryan Van Sanford (Colorado Springs, CO) in 11th place ($7,459).

The clock was then paused, signifying the end of play for the night, but not before players were given their seating assignments for tomorrow's final table:
