Jeffrey Fogel (Pembroke Pines, FL) decided to join the action at the last possible moment, but has made the most with
his time at the table since.

Jeffrey Fogel (Pembroke Pines, FL) was one of the final entries into this flight, arriving just as the break after Level 8 was starting.  He started off his day with just over (24) big blinds, and now after an hour of play, has increased his 20,000 unit starting stack to 45,000.  While still below average, the stack does offer Fogel some maneuverability, as well as fold equity.  

Fogel is coming off a successful WSOP Circuit as Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood, falling just short of a ring, after finishing second in Event #2 of the series ($300 No Limit Hold'em Turbo).  The cash was worth $12,432, which is now his largest tournament score to date, besting his $8,155 score from the 2015 Colossus event during the WSOP.

Hari Sukhu (Miramar, FL) rocks what has to be the best facial hair in the Flight 1C field...and likely the entire poker room.

After calling a 2,100 open, and then flatting an 11,000 three-bet, Hari Sukhu (Miramar, FL) would go to a flop against two opponents (with one all-in for 9,100).  The dealer placed down a starting board of A♥ J♠ 4♠, and Hari followed by announcing himself all-in, which would be enough to cover his only active opponent.  Though pained by the decision, his adversary would slam his chips down on the felt for a call, immediately turning over K♣ K♦.  Sukhu then calmly tabled A♠ K♠, having grabbed a huge lead with a pair of aces and a flush draw (the player who was all-in pre held Q♣ 8♦).  

Hari ended up improving to a flush on the river, but his pair of aces were good enough for the win, and the pot worth close to 60,000.  That sizable win would bring Sukhu above the 100,000 mark, and puts him in the top five of the remaining chip counts.

Georges Boyadjian (Pompano Beach, FL) is all smiles, as he tops the first list of updated chip counts from the field.

Registration is now closed for Flight 1C of Event #1 (2017 Isle Open), and the official numbers are in.  There were a total of (107) entries in this second afternoon flight, with (52) players currently active in the field.  The total number of entries equates to $14,445 towards the overall prize pool, which now has a combined total of $42,795 (almost halfway to the guaranteed number).

Georges Boyadjian (Pompano Beach, FL) tops the chip counts "post-break," sitting with just over 145,000 in front of him...close to four-times the Level 9 chip average.  Boyadjian is a very accomplished tournament player, with over $275,000 in career earnings, spanning (107) recorded results.  Georges is also coming off a Isle Poker Room series in which he won his first trophy at the room, taking down Event #5 of the Florida State Poker Championships ($120 No Limit Hold'em | $1,865).

Will Reich (Branford, CT) doesn't mind seeing a player shove over his open when he's holding pocket aces.

There really aren't many "bad times" for pockets aces, but right before registration closes for a flight could be considered one of the "perfect times."  Will Reich (Branford, CT) opened the action with a raise to 1,500, followed by a call from an unknown player on the button.  The small blind then released his hand, leaving Jacquelyn Scott to act (in the big blind).  Scott collected her chips in one hand, and simultaneously announced herself all-in, as she dropped the pile of chips on the felt.

"Alright...I'm all-in too," Will Reich said aloud, having both active players in the hand covered.  The button folded his hand, and Scott would be at risk.  Things looked pretty bleak for Scott after she saw her A♣ Q♦ up against the A♥ A♠ of Reich, with the K♥ 8♠ 8♣ flop leaving only hopes of running queens to keep her in the flight.  The turn would have Scott drawing dead, and she would exit the table, while Reich stacked up his newfound chips (worth over 55,000).

"A perfect time for aces," a player said to Will, who just looked over with a smile.

Players are heading on their second break of the day (at the end of this level), and will return to new blinds of 400/800/100 (Level 9).  Once the cards are in the air for Level 9, registration will officially be closed for Flight 1C.

Robert Barreto (Coral Springs, FL) is currently pacing the field, with over 90,000 at the moment.

As new players continue to file in...and others file out, we have spotted our first player to gain a little separation from the rest of the field.  Robert Barreto (Coral Springs, FL) is sitting with just over 90,000 at the moment, which is over triple the current chip average of 29,000.  While Barreto's tournament resume may lack in quantity (only five recorded results), it surely doesn't lack in quality.  Those four of those five results are cashes over $1,300, including a $7,500 score (2015 SHRPO $5,250 Championship Event), and a $5,000 score (2015 Coco Poker Open $2,500 Championship Event).  Barreto has clear experience against tough fields, and has made himself a very early favorite for the "chip lead bonus."

David Gelley (Boca Raton, FL) has made a habit of reaching final tables here a the Isle Poker Room, and
has his sights set on another deep run.

While Anthony Astarita's name was one that needed introduction to followers of the Isle Poker Room blog, David Gelley (Boca Raton, FL) should be no stranger to those keeping up with tournament action.  Gelley made his first appearance on the blog in April of this year, earning second place money in a twelve-way chop that ended the "April $100,000" (a $350 No Limit Hold'em event run outside of any series).  David's "runner-up" finish was worth $15,418, which still stands as his second largest tournament cash.

Gelley went on to accomplish a pretty impressive feat, reaching final tables of back-to-back multi-flight tournaments in August.  On August 20th, David was part of a nine-way chop that ended the "August $150,000" (a $360 No Limit Hold'em event run outside of a series.  This time he would earn sixth place money ($15,110), almost matching his total from April.  Exactly a week later, David would reach the final table of the "August $100,000" ($150 No Limit Hold'em), bowing out in seventh place (and earning $3,706).

The trio of cashes have helped balloon his career earnings over $136,000, and made him a clear favorite to run deep in any Isle Poker event he enters.

Anthony Astarita (Tampa, FL) may not be well known name to the followers of the blog, but he's surely
made a name for himself in the tournament poker community.

Players are taking notice of this series from all over the state, as we continue to see an influx of players from the "west side" of Florida.  Anthony Astarita (Tampa, FL) joined the field before break, sitting down with an impressive tournament resume.  Astarita broke out last year, notching his first ever tournament score in June, during the opening event of the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Summer Series ($570 No Limit Hold'em | 55th Place - $1,187).  Anthony continued to build on that resume, cashing in Event #3 of the same series, just a few days later.  

Astarita wasn't done though, as he followed those two cashes up with a deep run in the WPT Deepstacks $1,100 Main Event (the main event of the series)...the deepest kind of run.  Anthony shipped the tournament for over $131,000, and started his tournament poker career with a true bang.  He has since recorded (20) more results "post-title," many of which came in his home state of Florida.  Looking to stay on top of the WPT Deepstacks tournament leaderboard, Astarita has also made a trip to Calgary, and most recently Oklahoma.  His last recorded cash was a final table finish during the $1,100 WPT Deepstacks Main Event at Downstream Casino in Oklahoma (7th Place - $9,164).

Chien Chiu (Coconut Creek, FL) used her Florida State Poker Championship title run as a stepping stone towards
a deep run on the West Coast.

The Flight 1C field is on a slightly slower pace than yesterday's afternoon flight, but we are still looking at crossing the century mark before registration closes.  The early field is a mix of players that played one of yesterday's flights (and didn't bag), along with those entering the event for the first time.  One of those "first-timers" is Chien Chiu (Coconut Creek, FL), an event winner during the 2017 Florida State Poker Championships.  Chiu topped the Event #6 ($100 No Limit Hold'em) field to take home her first Isle Poker title, and just over $3,200.  Chien has gone on to see great success since that tournament win, including a deep run in the Legends Of Poker $160 No Limit Hold'em (Mega Millions Series) event, finishing in 32nd place for $7,605 (which stands as her largest tournament cash).

Tournament Supervisor Adam Kemper is once again going over the rules announcement, this time for the players in this afternoon's Flight 1C field.  Yesterday's opening pair of flights attracted a total of (210) entries, many of which were notables names to the Isle Poker Room.  From the total number, (32) players were able to bag chips for Sunday's Day 2, led by Sean Jones (303,000) from Flight 1B, and Darcy Deconza (234,500) from Flight 1A.  Jones and Deconza both earned seats into Event #15 of the Isle Open ($1,100 No Limit Hold'em | $150,000 GTD), courtesy of the "chip lead bonus" from each flight.

There are still six more seats to be awarded over the next three days, starting with the chip leader from this afternoon's flight.  The structure mirrors yesterday's action, with players sitting down to starting stacks of 20,000 units, and playing levels of (25) minutes over the course of the flight.  Play is scheduled to conclude after (16) completed levels, but if the field reaches the 10% number, then the clock will pause and the bagging process will begin.  That is exactly what happened last night in Flight 1B, with the action stopping with just over three minutes in Level 15.  Therefore, Day 2 will now begin at that point, meaning the big stacks begin the day even deeper planned (along with the shorter stacks as well, which is even more important to those players).

Live coverage of Flight 1C will continue throughout the afternoon, updating followers on all of the action, including the "race for the chip lead bonus."  The official counts from the opening pair of flights, along with a reminder of the new Twitter handle (@PokerIslePP) will be posted, before we shift our focus onto the notables in today's flight.

Thursday, October 5th: Strong Start For Event 1 Of Isle Open, Jones And Deconza Bag Leads

ICYMI: If yesterday was a sign of things to come, then we can expect a pretty special opening event for the 2017 Isle Open.  The pair of opening flights for Event #1 ($175 No Limit Hold'em | $150,000 GTD) attracted a total of 210 entries, with (113) of those entries making up Flight 1A, and (97) in Flight 1B.  There would be (22) players to bag chips from Flight 1A (which ended after the scheduled sixteen levels), and (10) to reach the Flight 1B bagging process which started with 3:18 minutes level in Level 15).  The combined numbers equate to $28,350 going towards the overall prize pool from the pair of flights, which is a pace to crush the guaranteed number.

We saw heaps of notables throughout the day yesterday, including Daniel Genachte (Deerfield Beach, FL), who was coming off of a dream run in the WSOP Circuit $1,675 Main Event.  After Genacthe's first attempt in Flight 1A fell short, he re-entered the flight, and ended up bagging (110,500).  Some other familiar names to book tickets (from both flights) into Sunday's Day 2 included Richard Wetter (216,500), James Newcomb (205,500), Scott Levitt (200,000), Patricia Conrad (182,000), Frederico Dabus (166,000), Thomas Gari (100,000), Stanton Drazen (77,500), and Nancy Thomas (31,000).  

Sean Jones (303,000) would bag the largest stack from the opening day, earning the Flight 1B chip lead bonus, and entry into Event #15 of the Isle Open.  Darcy Deconza (234,500) was the first player to grab a seat into that prestigious event, after bagging the Flight 1A chip lead, and finishing in the top five for the day:

Tournaments: After such a strong start to the tournament, it will be interesting to see the trends that take shape over the next three days.  The numbers in a multi-flight tournament such as Event 1 usually grow as the weekend is reached, meaning that we could be looking at one of the largest opening event fields in the history of the Isle Open.  There are six flights over the next three days, with the players that have bagged chips returning for Day 2 on Sunday.  Each of the starting flights have the same structure, with entrants sitting down to starting stacks of 20,000 units, and playing levels that last (25) minutes over the course of the event.  Registration for each flight is open through Level 8 (approx. 2:40pm), and is scheduled to conclude after Level 16 (approx. 6:10pm).  The chip lead bonus is back, as the player to bag the largest stack from each flight will earn a seat into Event #15 ($1,100 No Limit Hold'em | $150,000 GTD).

Promotions: When the doors open for the day, the first hour (9:00am-10:00am) will award $150 every (30) minutes.  The high hands will then transition from 10:00am-12:00am (midnight), with the opportunity to win $400 every (30) minutes.  During that period, the promotion sees tournament players eligible each half-hour for $100 high hands, 2/2 limit hold'em players eligible for $200 high hands, 2/4 limit hold'em players eligible for $300 high hands, and all other raked games (1/2-5/10 NLH, 4/8 Omaha 8B, 6/12 O.E., etc.) eligible for $400 high hands.  From 12:00am-3:00am, players are eligible for $100 high hands every hour.

Darcy Deconza (Hollywood, FL) sheds the sunglasses for the first time all day, happy to smile for her "chip leading photo," as she becomes the first player to earn entry into Event #15 of the 2017 Isle Open ($1,100 NLH).

Richard Wetter and Darcy Deconza traded the chip lead a handful of times over the final level of the flight, but it would be a Deconza who would sit with the largest stack at the end of play (234,500).  Eric Piderit also made a run at the Event #15 seat, winning a 220,000 pot versus Robert Tanner, just three hands before the clock was paused.

Deconza is a recreational player from Hollywood, who has now booked her seat into the largest buy-in event of her career.  Darcy found herself towards the top of the leaderboard early in the flight, but used a critical hand against Elsie Rodrigues to really put herself in chip lead contention (with her Q♥ Q♣ besting the J♠ J♥ of Rodriguez, all-in pre for a pot worth 190,000).

The tournament staff is currently verifying the stacks of the (23) players that reached the bagging process, with official counts to be posted here on the blog shortly afterwards (just after 7:00pm).  This will conclude live coverage for the day, but followers can check back after the conclusion of Flight 1B (which is in action), for official counts from the second flight of Event #1.

Richard Wetter (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) currently paces the field as the round the homestretch.

Play is just a few moments away from entering the last level of the flight, meaning players are in the "homestretch," in regards to the flight's chip lead bonus (an Event #15 seat).  Richard Wetter (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) is currently leading the field, sitting as the only player over the 200,000 mark (220,000).  Wetter is better known for his two WSOP Circuit rings, both won in Seniors events at the Palm Beach Kennel Club (2013 and 2016).  He has over $50,000 in tournament earnings, but hasn't notched an Isle Poker tournament cash since March of 2015 (Battle At The Beach).

There are a handful of players within striking distance of Richard, so the landscape can change with every hand that passes.  When ten minutes remain in Level 16, the tournament clock will be paused, and players will finish with a pre-determined amount of hands (which will be updated later, as the number has yet to have been announced).

Darcy Deconza (Hollywood, FL) doubles up, and sits with a top-ten stack heading to the final break of Flight 1A.

The words "all-in" could be heard from across the room, as the dealer at Table 3 made sure everyone knew the action.  It would be Darcy Deconza (Hollywood, FL) four-bet shoving for 42,400, over an open from Frank Scala, and a 20,000 three-bet from Elsie Rodrigues (a former dealer here at the Isle Poker Room).  Scala ended up releasing his hand when faced with the four-bet, but Elsie would make the call, having Deconza covered (by just a few thousand).

When the hands were turned over, it would be Deconza's Q♥ Q♣ well ahead of the J♠ J♥ of Rodrigues.  Elsie would actually gain some outs heading to the river (9♠ 9♣ 8♥ 7♣ runout to that point), but bricked when the 4♣ hit the felt.  Darcy would more than double to 90,000, while Elsie found herself with less than three big blinds (5,000).
