Robert Johnston was flipping for his tournament life, and experienced the the ugly side of variance, as Michael Marks paired his king on the flop.

Trent Smith limped from under the gun, and after Tom Gity folded, Rob Johnston went into the tank.  He stared down Smith, concerned with his choice of action (the limp).  Eventually Johnston would announce that he was all-in (for just over 1,400,000), with action folding around to Michael Marks.  After getting an exact count, Marks would re-shove, clearing out the button and blinds:

Johnston: 9 9♠
Marks: A K♣

Runout: K 10♣ 5♣ A Q♣

Johnston, who had doubled just a few hands prior, would be racing for his tournament life.  The flop was unkind though, and Rob would be looking for a two-outer to reclaim the lead.  It wasn't meant to be for Johnston, who wished everyone good luck, before walking away from the table.
